The future of golf remains uncertain given the current standoff between the PGA Tour and LIV Golf, but tensions are slowly but surely being eased.

LIV Golf want teams to be self-sufficient, but that is proving difficult given the lack of value of such teams on the PIF-funded tour.

A framework agreement was reached between LIV Golf and the PGA Tour in June 2023, but a final resolution has yet to be reached.

Players are, however, now seemingly taking matters into their own hands, although The Showdown has not been sanctioned by either tour.

But it does pit PGA Tour duo Rory McIlroy and Scottie Scheffler against LIV Golf pair Bryson DeChambeau and Brooks Koepka.

Golf fans react as Brooks Koepka teases LIV Golf v PGA Tour Ryder Cup

The Showdown has a purse of at least $10million, with the four star names going head-to-head in Las Vegas next week.

But an official grudge match could yet be announced, with Matt Vincenzi writing on X: “Brooks Koepka and Bryson DeChambeau just told me that next year we may get a LIV vs. PGA Tour Ryder Cup style match.”

And that has caused plenty of excitement among many golf fans, with one writing on X: “Good for these guys finally taking control over their own careers, likenesses images and value. They should get together with the top players and form their own league and just do this and everyone would watch it.”

Other fans shared their delight at the idea, saying: “I’ve seen this coming for a while. Would be great  – some real rivalry,” and “That would be the best thing that could ever happen to golf.”

But scepticism also arrived, with one fan commenting: “I would love this and probably try to attend even. My main doubt is how it could fit in the schedule next year, especially as it is already a Ryder Cup year. Would they pick teams or just go with top 12 of the season standings as reward for season play like an all-star game?”

Further doubters said: “Oh, so the former Presidents Cup just with an improved ‘rest of the world’ side” and “Probably excites the players far more than the golf fans!”

Could a PGA Tour vs LIV Golf Ryder Cup be successful?

A long list of team events already exists across the PGA Tour and LIV Golf calendars, with the busy schedule perhaps not allowing much room for another.

That may be the first barrier that any event organisers may have to cross to get this intriguing idea over the line.

Player selection, venues and prize money are other factors that need to be considered, although it is likely all irrelevant if no deal can be agreed between the two tours.

Perhaps this may be key to the ongoing discussions between LIV Golf and the PGA Tour, with the players seemingly more eager to reach a merger than the powers that be.

Given the high-profile names that would be involved in a Ryder Cup-style competition, a huge audience could certainly be achieved if carried out correctly.

Fortunately, any tournament organisers have the perfect opportunity to gauge potential interest with The Showdown later this month.
