Popular golf media personality Dan Rapaport had a front-row seat for the first-ever match of the TGL at the SoFi Centre.

Those in search of a close match were left disappointed, however, as Shane Lowry and Ludvig Aberg starred for The Bay Golf Club, who cruised to a 9-2 win over Xander Schauffele’s New York Golf Club.

Despite the one-sided nature of the opening fixture, many golf fans were pleasantly surprised by the TGL. It appears to be a product that could prove entertaining over the coming weeks and months.

Many TGL sceptics will now support the league, and Rapaport believes the Palm Beach venture has many positive aspects.

Taking to X after Tuesday’s action, Rapaport admitted the tech-infused arena blew him away after seeing it first-hand.

“TGL aside, the SoFi Center is incredible,” he wrote. A golf playground with millions and millions of dollars behind it. The best possible spot for a bachelor party. Throw a game on the screens, hit off real grass, play ridiculous holes, real bunkers, green moves all over the place. I’m in.”

He added: “TGL lends itself well to social clips. Golf is a unique sport where amazing players can talk trash between shots. That’s the relatable stuff. They’re not sweating, out of breath. We don’t get to see it on the PGA Tour, but we do out here. A lot lot to like about this.”

Popular golf content creator Paige Spiranac also shared her thoughts after the first night’s action. “Watching the launch of TGL, I have to say it’s fun to see the guys more relaxed! I think we will really get to see their personalities shine in this format,” she wrote.

There were some, however, who were slightly more sceptical. “Just had a golf buddy call and say, “This is so cool, I’m really impressed… but now that I’ve seen it, I don’t really want to watch anymore.” That’s a very fair assessment,” wrote SiriusXM radio host Jason Sobel.

Tiger Woods’ Jupiter Links GC will play Los Angeles GC in next week’s match. Rory McIlroy will not play until Boston Common GC debuts at the end of January.

League fixtures will take place throughout the first two months of the year before the semi-finals and final happen in March.
