The long-awaited TGL has finally begun, and Shane Lowry and Ludvig Aberg starred on night one at the SoFi Centre.

The Bay Golf Club thrashed New York Golf Club 9-2 at the purpose-built Arena in Palm Beach, Florida. The tech-heavy league sees PGA Tour stars battle it out on a simulator and a real-life short-game area.

It was a tough night for New York – made up of Xander Schauffele, Matt Fitzpatrick, Rickie Fowler and Cameron Young – who found themselves six down after six holes.

With Lowry and Aberg in red-hot form, the Bay Golf Club sealed victory early on in the singles and earned two points to jump to the top of the TGL standings.

Golf fans react to first-ever TGL match

With many sceptical about the TGL and its place within professional golf, organisers will be pleased with the entertainment provided during the first night’s action.

And fans around the world liked what they saw.

“I gotta say I’m a bit surprised by my 10-year-old’s reaction to @TGL,” this fan wrote. “She’s like, this is way better than what you were watching on Sunday!”

Another fan said: “I have to say, I’m pleasantly surprised watching @TGL early on! My expectations were low coming in, but I love the fast pace and we’re seeing players show more personality than usual.”

This fan added: “#TGL is pretty fun! Genuinely and pleasantly surprised!”

While another remarked: “In a surprise, @TGL is fun, actually.”

Finally, these fans added, “Honestly, it was way better than I thought it was going to be. They got a lot right. Kudos.”

“I had very low expectations, but the TGL is better than I thought it would be. The hammer element is wonderful. Lots of room to grow. I predict this concept will be all over DFW and the nation in a couple years.”

What’s next in the TGL schedule?

After the well-received first night of action, Tiger Woods’ Jupiter Links Golf Club face Los Angeles Golf Club in week two. The 15-time major winner recently returned to the course at the PNC Championship after undergoing back surgery in September.

New York Golf Club will be back in action on January 21 against Atlanta Drive GC before Rory McIlroy’s Boston Common Golf Club start their season underway on January 27.

With Woods and McIlroy set to be involved, the TGL’s popularity could grow significantly over the coming weeks and months.

The league season will conclude on March 5, with the semi-finals taking place on March 18 and 19 before a three-night-long final at the end of the month.
