Bryson DeChambeau rocked the golfing world after shooting 58 during LIV Golf’s 2023 Greenbrier event in Virginia.

The big-hitting American’s round of 12 under saw him become just the seventh man in professional golf to achieve the feat and fourth on one of golf’s main tours.

DeChambeau has been out of action since LIV Golf’s JCB event but is now back at Greenbrier and looking to replicate his stunning performance 12 months ago.

The 30-year-old missed out on last week’s Olympic golf event due to his lack of OWGR points, but DeChambeau still messaged the American team who were selected for the event at Le Golf National.

DeChambeau wants an Olympic qualifying event added ahead of the Los Angeles games. Qualification would prevent this perhaps unwanted mid-season break ahead of the conclusion of the LIV Golf season.

Ahead of the Greenbrier event, DeChambeau was asked to share his thoughts on his stunning 58 12 months ago and whether the feat could be achieved again.

“I am trying to break 50 on my YouTube channel, but I can tell you, breaking 58, I am sure somebody is going to do it at one of these times. We’re just too good now! There is going to be a time where everything lines up,” DeChambeau explained.

“David Duval was one of the first, Al Geiberger was the first, Mr. 59 and others since then have done it. It’s starting to get a little easier. It’s like runners breaking the four-minute mile; there was one person who broke it, and next year, there were 12.”

The two-time US Open winner went on to suggest that 57 and 56 aren’t entirely out of the question.

“It opens up the door with Joaquin shooting 59; you’re starting to see it more and more. I believe there will be a 57 at some point, even a 56 potentially. It’s going to get more consistent over the course of time; we’re just too good now, and it’s fun.”

The four players who have shot 58 at professional events

DeChambeau’s effort last year placed him among an extremely elite group of players. There are only four players who have carded 58 in professional golf and just one on the PGA Tour.

The American’s perfect storm at Greenbrier will live long in the memory due to it happening on LIV and coming fairly recently.

Jim Furyk’s PGA Tour effort at the 2016 Travelers is also infamous. The American’s 58 included ten birdies, an eagle and seven pars. Furyk remains the only PGA Tour player to manage the feat and also holds the record for the lowest 18-hole round.

Interestingly, Furyk’s 58 came six years after Ryo Ishikawa became the first person ever to post the score at the 2010 Crowns. Kim Seong-Hyeon also hit the number at the 2021 Japan Golf Tour’s Partner Pro-Am in 2021.
