Billy Horschel is well in contention to win the BMW PGA Championship after a stunning third round alongside Rory McIlroy today.

Horschel was out with McIlroy and the in-form Matteo Manassero and all three produced to sit as the top three heading into Sunday.

Manassero is the leader by three but Horschel and McIlroy are right there on the prowl.

Of course, Horschel’s round was highlighted by a quite stunning run where he made seven birdies in a row to come within two of equalling the record of nine straight.

And discussing that run and the influence of playing with two in-form players, Horschel has opened up about how he was feeling out on the Wentworth turf.

Billy Horschel discusses his seven straight birdies at the BMW PGA Championship

Asked about his stunning run of putts, Horschel explained what he was feeling as the putts started to drain consistently.

“Yeah, the hole looked like the size of the Atlantic Ocean. I made some long putts, and had some close ones, as well. It was pretty special.,” Horschel said.

Asked further if he felt he was feeding off McIlroy and Manassero, Horschel admitted the feeling was definitely there.

“Yeah, I think so. Matteo got off to a really good start. Made a run there in the middle of the round. After my bogey on No. 7, I got started. We were all feeding off each other,” he quipped.

“Rory could easily have shot two or three better. He hit some putts there at the end that could easily have gone in.

“But yeah, really good round of golf with two really good guys and looks like we’re going to be grouped together again tomorrow.”

McIlroy and Horschel will be confident of a big finish

As Horschel mentions, McIlroy could quite easily be further up the leaderboard and he knows he cost himself shots by finding water down the stretch.

McIlroy admitted earlier in the week he’d love to win the BMW PGA again and follow in the footsteps of some all-time greats.

Whether he can follow through, remains to be seen.

Nevertheless, McIlroy and Horschel are set right up for a blockbuster finish tomorrow and it looks like we could have a big name on the trophy once more.
