The Scot now has grand ambitions in golf, with Murray pairing with Robert MacIntyre at the BMW PGA Championship in Wentworth.

Andy Murray reveals planned timeline to become a scratch golfer

Murray, a three-time Grand Slam champion, will have undoubtedly enjoyed his experience at Wentworth Golf Club.

But the Scot will have also learned a lot from MacIntyre and the other star golfers on show, with Murray now revealing in his BMW PGA Championship Pro-Am press conference how long he thinks it will take him to get down to scratch.

“A couple years probably,” he said. “I think so. I mean, I’m obviously getting to practise a lot more than the average person.

“I obviously played a bit when I was younger, and if I can get the right sort of lessons and practise the right things, then yeah, I’ve got a chance of doing that I think in a couple years.

“The lessons have made a huge difference. That’s been the most important thing for me. I used to go down to the range and hit lots of balls, and I could hit a few good ones.

“But if you have a fundamental flaw in your swing or what you’re doing, it doesn’t matter how many balls you hit on the range. So getting lessons and practising those things is helping.”

MacIntyre also thoroughly enjoyed the experience of playing alongside his compatriot at Wentworth, where the duo were joined by Jimmy Anderson and Anton Du Beke.

The Scottish golfer will now be keen to put on his serious hat as the BMW PGA Championship gets underway.

MacIntyre enjoyed a superb PGA Tour season, with wins at the Canadian Open and Scottish Open going his way before a T17 finish in the FedEx Cup.

He goes into Wentworth on the back of a T5 finish at the Irish Open, where McIlroy endured another heartbreak to finish second.

The Northern Irishman, who played with Bale and Stuart Broad in the Pro-Am, will also be eager to switch his focus back to the main competition at Wentworth.

He finished T9 in the FedEx Cup, and has an immediate chance to recover from that nightmare final round on home soil at Royal County Down.
