The ‘simple’ tip Justin Rose has used himself to help amateur golfers improve their swing

Justin Rose has the ideal opportunity to put his heartache from The Masters behind him this week, where he is in the field for the RBC Heritage.

Scottie Scheffler won the RBC Heritage in 2024, with the world number one joining Rose in taking on the latest PGA Tournament of 2025.

Rose was happy to witness Rory McIlroy’s win at The Masters up close, having been gracious in defeat after their playoff at Augusta.

Both players finished Sunday at the top of the pile on 11-under, with McIlroy winning the playoff at the first attempt.

McIlroy clinched a first-ever green jacket as he completed the career grand slam, with Rose suffering his second playoff defeat at The Masters.

That loss to Sergio Garcia in 2017 came four years after the Englishman emerged victorious at the US Open, representing his only major win to date.

That is one of his 11 wins on the PGA Tour, with amateurs and indeed many of his fellow professionals therefore wise to listen to any advice the veteran has to offer.

And as per Dan McCracken Golf, advice is available for those struggling with their swing, with Rose sharing a handy tip to improve in that area.

Offering a demonstration, he said: “If you’re struggling with your upper body out racing on the way down, here’s a very simple concept I’m going to give to you, and it’s actually something I’ve played with.

“I actually remember being at the Arnold Palmer Invitational playing with Tiger Woods using this exact feel myself.

“So, can you skim a rock? You know exactly what it looks like, at least, right? So obviously, if I was to try and skim a rock, and my upper body was out racing, I’m going to stick that rock right into the water… and I’m not going to impress my kids.

“So, what are you going to do? You’re going to get to the top, you’re going to keep your right arm back, your left hip is going to open out, you’re going to stay forward bent and turned, and you’re going to skim that rock. That feeling will definitely take care of this problem.”

Rose was more than in contention to win The Masters this time around, having led by three shots after round one.

He started out with a superb 65, but his lead was cut to just one after a second round 71 at Augusta National.

The wheels then came off for the Englishman in round three, with a 75 sending him to T6 as McIlroy raced to the top of the pile.

But a superb final round 66 saw Rose join McIlroy on 277 shots overall, only for the Northern Irishman to steal the limelight in the playoff.
