Shane Lowry’s ‘best tip’ for amateur golfers who are looking to hit their driver much better

Shane Lowry has both eyes firmly set on the Masters, having enjoyed himself on the PGA Tour so far this season.

Lowry is yet to add to his three PGA Tour wins in 2025, but does boast three top 10 finishes from his seven starts so far, and is fourth in the European Ryder Cup standings.

Min Woo Lee impressed Scottie Scheffler with his Houston Open win, with the Valero Texas Open now up next in the schedule.

Top 10 players Ludvig Aberg and Hideki Matsuyama are both involved, but many players are already looking ahead to Augusta National.

The first major championship of the season returns to the iconic Georgia course later this month, with Lowry seeking a second major championship win.

Top-class driving is certain to be key to any success at Augusta, with Lowry having recently been on hand to help amateurs in this regard for Golf Monthly.

Sharing driving advice for amateurs, the 2019 Open champion said: “My best driving tip is… I actually find it difficult to give like a blanket driving tip.

“But I would say for a lot of amateur golfers, I always feel like they try and hit the ball really hard with a driver especially, so a lot of them come over the top.

“You very rarely see amateurs getting underneath it. So for me, I would say more of a feeling than anything else, will be like when you get to the top of the backswing that rather than trying to hit it as hard as you can, just feel like you pause for a second.

“Almost think of Hideki [Matsuyama]. Just think of what he does. And if you pause at the top, it just allows your body to get in the right place, and the club to drop on the right path.

“That would be something that… honestly I play Pro-Ams every week and I see it a lot, and that would be one tip that… probably the tip I give most to a lot of people.”

Lowry started his 2025 PGA Tour season in disastrous fashion, with the Irishman missing the cut at the Farmers Insurance Open.

But he bounced back in style to finish second to close friend Rory McIlroy at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am.

Other top 10 finishes have arrived at the Arnold Palmer Invitational and the Valspar Championship, where Lowry finished seventh and T8 respectively.

A handful of reasons behind that strong start have emerged, with Lowry ranked fourth for Strokes Gained: Tee-to-Green on the PGA Tour in 2025.

Through the Houston Open, he ranks behind only Collin Morikawa and serial winners Rory McIlroy and Scottie Scheffler overall.

That should give him great confidence for Augusta, with Lowry clearly capable of keeping tabs on the big names on the PGA Tour.
