Jordan Spieth has been considered one of the best wedge players on the PGA Tour for over a decade.

Spieth is no longer the world-class all-around golfer he once was, but he is still a genius with a wedge in his hands.

The American gained 0.204 strokes per round around the greens this season, ranking seventh on the PGA Tour.

Spieth once told amateur golfers the keys to hitting wedge shots so they could get closer to his level.

Jordan Spieth’s advice on hitting wedge shots

One of the reasons golf is so difficult is that there are several different swings; hitting a driver is totally dissimilar to hitting a wedge.

While golfers need to generate speed and power in drives and iron shots, wedge play is all about finesse and accuracy.

Do you think golfers should receive a free drop from divots in the fairway?

That’s why Spieth encouraged amateurs to focus on having a “very stable base” and no unnecessary body movement.

“The most important thing when you’re hitting a wedge shot is to get a very stable base and to have as little movement throughout your body as possible,” Spieth explained.

“I like to keep my weight a little bit more forward than I would on a full swing. As I set the club down, the ball position is usually a bit further back, and my weight is a little bit forward.

“Then I just try and simplify things. I’m taking it back and through. I’m not trying to move my body, lift it up, or hit too far down. I’m just allowing the club to do the work through the turf.”

When will Jordan Spieth next play on the PGA Tour?

Jordan Spieth has not played a single PGA Tour event since the FedEx St Jude Championship in August.

Spieth was not in the top 50 in the FedEx Cup standings after the St Jude, so he missed the BMW Championship and the Tour Championship.

Patrick Reed has his say on the free drop from fairway divots debate

“You should be able to take relief. I mean, why don’t you get rewarded for a great drive? I mean, that stuff for me, it’s like, alright, if we can do all the other stuff on fixing things, why is it that we don’t get rewarded for a good golf shot?”

The 32-year-old has also not featured in any of the PGA Tour Fall Series events in the last two months and will not feature in the RSM Classic.

Spieth is finally going to return to PGA Tour action at the Hero World Challenge in the Bahamas in December.

He will be joined by Scottie Scheffler, Keegan Bradley, Justin Rose, and several other big names.
