Michael Jordan once picked out the three current American golfers who he feels are similar to himself, two are now playing on LIV

Michael Jordan enjoyed an unforgettable basketball career, but the American legend also has strong ties to golf.

Jordan once mastered the 17th hole at TPC Sawgrass, while he has been spotted at plenty of other major golfing events over the years.

Tiger Woods has a great relationship with Jordan, with both stars having transcended their respective fields.

Woods has unfortunately had his career massively disrupted by injury in recent times, having failed to appear on the PGA Tour this season.

But Woods did enjoy Rory McIlroy’s win at The Masters, while he will undoubtedly be keeping tabs on the other major tournaments in 2025.

And that includes the Ryder Cup, when America and Europe will once again go head-to-head, this time at Bethpage Black.

It is a tournament that basketball hero Jordan has been involved in previously, having served as an advisor and motivator to the US team in 2012.

And at the 2021 edition, he sat down with fellow basketball icon Steph Curry, where he discussed which players he sees himself in.

“I like to say that the competitive nature, you can see it in a lot of the guys and it comes in a lot of different ways,” said Jordan.

“I can see a little bit of myself in JT (Justin Thomas), I can see a bit of myself in Brooks [Koepka] and I can see a bit of my calmness and confidence in DJ (Dustin Johnson). So I can see a lot of those qualities that it takes to be successful.”

Thomas, Johnson and Koepka have all been key figures for the American Ryder Cup team at various stages over the years.

But it is only PGA Tour star Thomas who currently finds himself in contention for another appearance at Bethpage in September.

He recently emerged victorious at the RBC Heritage, and is currently within the top six of the US qualification standings.

Johnson and Koepka meanwhile are both competing on LIV Golf, where they occupy the 23rd and 13th places respectively in the individual standings.

Back in the Ryder Cup rankings, however, their fellow LIV Golf ace Bryson DeChambeau is two spots ahead of Thomas in fourth.

He is behind only Scottie Scheffler, Xander Schauffele and Collin Morikawa, with Koepka down in 86th and Johnson further back in 112th.
