It’s been a big week for LPGA Tour players, proving just how good they really are.

First, Nelly Korda beat Grant Horvat after starting five strokes back off the same tees, ending the debate as to whether a male scratch golfer could beat the number one women’s player in the world.

Then, Donald Trump’s granddaughter, Kai Trump, endured a disastrous start to her LPGA Tour debut after receiving a sponsor exemption for the Annika tournament in Florida. The 18-year-old started 13 over par in her opening round, leaving her bottom of the leaderboard after one day.

If there was any doubt over just how good players on the LPGA Tour are, that discussion should now be put to rest.

And when Horvat played Trump at Trump Jupiter, Florida last year, it showed how far she really is from matching Korda’s level.

Who won in a match between Grant Horvat and Kai Trump

Horvat and Trump played a stroke play match over nine holes at her grandfather’s course, with Horvat, a +3 handicap, playing off the gold tees, and Trump off the whites.

And while neither player showered themselves in glory at this incredibly difficult golf course, it was Horvat who emerged the victor on the ninth green.

Should Kai Trump have received a sponsor exemption for The Annika?

Horvat was three over par, and Trump narrowly missed a long putt on the final green, which could have put some pressure on her opponent.

Instead, she finished the front nine at five over par, a tough day for Trump, who revealed she was a -0.3 handicap prior to the round.

While Trump has likely improved since this video, released in July 2024, her performance against Horvat and on her LPGA Tour debut round shows how far she still is from the world’s best players.

Despite propping up the leaderboard after one day on her LPGA Tour debut, Trump remained positive about the experience after the round.

Kai Trump shared her thoughts on her opening round at The Annika

“I was definitely more nervous than I expected, but I thought I hit a lot of great shots out there. I hit a lot of good shots just to the wrong spots.

“And obviously being, you know, my first LPGA event, now I kind of know how it goes. I felt like a little out of order in the beginning but I kind of got it going afterwards.

“Yeah, I mean, I learned a lot. It was amazing. I had a great time out there. Yeah, didn’t play the way I wanted obviously, but for my first event ever I think I played pretty good”

Trump now has the chance to reset and learn from her opening round into day two of the tournament, where she’ll hope the only way is up!
