Winning on the PGA Tour is hard. Winning more than once on the PGA Tour is even harder. But winning more than once and having to wait a decade and a half between those wins, is quite something else.

Over the years, we’ve seen countless top players register just a single win on the PGA Tour and never be heard of again.

Likewise, we’ve seen examples of players at the very top of their game who just can’t get a win, for example, until this year, Tommy Fleetwood was right in that category.

However, winning a PGA Tour event must immediately send a feeling through that you have made it and more will follow.

But for former TOUR player Robert Gamez, after making a splash in 1990 by winning twice, the wait for his next win would be more than 15 years.

How Robert Gamez went a record 15 years between PGA Tour wins

There are some records on the PGA Tour you want and some you don’t anything to do with.

For Robert Gamez, he very much stands in the column of unwanted record.

Gamez was a young golfer making his way in the late 80s and early 90s after playing in the Walker Cup in 1989 and dropping from University to turn pro the same year.

It wouldn’t be long before Gamez found success either as he won the Northern Telecom Tucson Open in the January of 1990 and then followed it up by winning the Nestle Invitational in March.

With two wins in just months on TOUR, expectations were high for the Las Vegas native.

However, in a remarkable twist of fate, it never got any better for Gamez until more than 15 years later.

In a turn of events nobody saw coming, Gamez just could not get another win. He finished runner up another eight times with a further 21 top fives but couldn’t get it done.

Nevertheless, persistence paid off and in 2005, Gamez finally got his third win on the PGA Tour as he won the Valero Texas Open by three shots to finally end his hoodoo.

Gamez’s gap between wins remains the longest in PGA Tour history.

Robert Gamez’s PGA Tour career in numbers

Gamez built himself a good career on the PGA Tour and there is no shame in winning three events, something a lot of players never manage.

The gap between wins two and three was a long one but ultimately, Gamez carved out a fine living from the game we love.

He played 552 events in that time, with the three wins the highlight and north of $8m earned in prize money to go with it.
