Scottie Scheffler is one player who should hope that Tiger Woods does indeed decide to take the Ryder Cup captaincy for the 2027 event at Adare Manor.

Following the news that Luke Donald will captain Europe for a third time at the 2027 Ryder Cup, all eyes are on the PGA of America.

What do you think about Luke Donald’s appointment?

Is this good or bad news for Europe?

The PGA of America have told Woods they ideally want a decision before The Masters. The 50-year-old is currently focused on being chairman of the Future Competition Committee, so it remains to be seen if he is willing to take on the captaincy in Ireland.

But Scottie Scheffler will certainly benefit if Woods does decide to face off with Donald.

How Scottie Scheffler has performed in his Ryder Cup career

Scheffler’s Ryder Cup record is modest to say the least. His best performance came when he was a rookie back in 2021 at Whistling Straits. On that occasion, there was little indication of what was to come from the 29-year-old.

As the American side’s talisman however, Scheffler has struggled. He suffered a record defeat on his way to failing to win any of his four matches in Rome in 2023. And he lost his first four matches at Bethpage.

Team USA are still working to find the right partner for Scheffler. He had not won on the PGA Tour the last time he delivered a full point over the first two days of a Ryder Cup.

If anyone can relate to what Scheffler is going through trying to find that magic formula, it is surely Tiger Woods.

Tiger Woods can empathise with Scottie Scheffler better than most

Woods lost 21 of his 37 Ryder Cup matches. Of course, Brookline was the only time that he was on the winning side in the event.

Obviously, Woods may not have all of the answers. But Woods and Scheffler are the two most dominant players the game has seen over the last 40 years.

Who is the best iron player?

Vote now for Scottie or Tiger…

He will know better than anyone how to handle the expectations on the Ryder Cup stage. He may also have some inspired pairings up his sleeve; putting Scheffler with the ideal partner to bring the very best out of him.

Woods’ legacy is not going to be defined by any Ryder Cup captaincy. However, Woods’ legacy as a Ryder Cup captain may largely hinge on just how much he manages to get out of Scheffler.
