Xander Schauffele is back in action at the St Jude Championship, two weeks after watching Scottie Scheffler win Olympic gold at Le Golf National.

The duo have been 2024’s standout performers and are currently ranked number one and two in the world.

In recent times, much debate has emerged over who has had a better season. Scheffler has seven wins, including the Masters and the Olympics, whereas Schauffele has landed two elusive major championships.

Smylie Kaufman says many players would take Schauffele’s season, whereas YouTube golf sensation Rick Shiels believes Scheffler is the Player of the Year.

Scheffler’s Olympic gold has potentially turned the tide in his favour, and Schauffele has now shared what felt “weird” about watching his compatriot win at the 2018 Ryder Cup venue.

Speaking during his pre-tournament press conference ahead of the St Jude Championship, Schauffele shared the mixed emotions he felt watching Scheffler on the podium.

“I am not going to lie; it’s the weirdest feeling,” Schauffele explained. “I was watching from the family section when they were on the podium, and you know Scottie was up there. Our flag was raised, and he started crying. I was hurt about my own round, and I was sitting there like this: pretty cool.”

The American added, “I like to think I can be rational, but I felt so emotional. I was hurt about how I played but also proud and happy that Scottie won it.”

FedEx Cup win could see Xander Schauffele have better 2024

Right now, given both players’ form, one of Scheffler or Schauffele should end up winning the FedEx Cup at the end of the month.

If one isn’t contending, the other is either winning or seriously threatening the leaders.

Schauffele is finally looking to top the FedEx Cup points list. The 30-year-old has finished second four times previously and hasn’t placed outside the top five since 2018.

Schauffele’s breakthrough was always going to happen, and given his winning touch this season, the American finally landing golf’s most profitable prize could well be just a matter of weeks away.
