Wyndham Clark was grouped with Rory McIlroy for the second round of the BMW Championship, and it was an eventful 18 holes for the American.

Clark carded a four-under 62 to play his way into the top ten and give a boost to his FedEx Cup aspirations. McIlroy is one shot back, but the Northern Irishman’s round wasn’t without controversy.

Golf fans mocked McIlroy after he threw his driver into the lake on 17, only to walk up and fish it out of the hazard almost immediately.

Clark, speaking after his round, has since been asked what it’s like playing alongside McIlroy.

Clark and McIlroy have regularly played together, and the American claims he enjoys the four-time major winner’s company.

“Yeah, I mean, Rory and I have probably played I’d say a total of 14, 15 rounds together,” said Clark. “Rory is a nice guy, and I typically, my demeanour, I like to talk to my playing partners. It helps me get into a better place.

“So I guess if that’s the case, we struck up some good conversations and had some good laughs. It kind of just makes the day a little bit more enjoyable and go by quicker.”

Wyndham Clark and Rory McIlroy firmly in the race for the FedEx Cup

Despite McIlroy’s issue on the 17th, both he and Clark are well-placed inside the FedEx Cup top 50 ahead of next week’s Tour Championship at East Lake.

Given the volatile nature of the playoff format, one streak of hot form can be enough to land golf’s most lucrative prize.

As we all know, McIlroy has been very successful at East Lake previously. If he can replicate his 2022 performance in Atlanta, he will stand every chance of landing the FedEx Cup title for a record fourth time.

Clark, on the other hand, will view making the Tour Championship field as a success. The 2023 US Open winner has had an up-and-down season, but positive signs have emerged that will give him a boost heading into the Fall.
