It’s safe to say Rory McIlroy was not overly happy with how things panned out during his second round of the BMW Championship.

The Northern Irishman carded a round of one-under par to finish three under for the tournament overall and sit some eight shots back behind leader, Adam Scott.

For McIlroy, the BMW is a chance to play himself into form with his position at the Tour Championship secure already.

However, things are not going well for McIlroy in all aspects of his game.

In fact, that sort of comment sums up 2024 for McIlroy really. There have been moments of sublime quality and signs he’s edging closer to major number five.

On the reverse of that, there’s been some woeful moments where he’s looked a mile off being anywhere near winning. See The Open at Royal Troon, for example.

Of course, there’s also been highs and lows for McIlroy in terms of his antics.

Who can forget McIlroy storming off from Pinehurst after Bryson DeChambeau won the US Open? Likewise, the back end of 2023 saw him clash with the US Team in the Ryder Cup.

It’s safe to say, then, that McIlroy can get fiery when needed and over on 17 today, McIlroy let that side of him surface again as he launched his club into the water after a wayward drive on 17.

Naturally, on social media, golf fans were quick to pass comment and it’s safe to say they were far from impressed with McIlroy.

Golf fans mock Rory McIlroy after his club throw on 17 at the BMW Championship

You’re never safe on social media these days and McIlroy will have trudged off 18 today knowing what was coming when he looked at his phone.

But rather than people just laying into him for losing his rag, most golf fans simply commented on how poor the attempted club throw was!

Another fan, @plenkeit2 suggested McIlroy should have just left his club, instead of going over to retrieve it.

“Lol, the indignity of having to go fish it out of the water At that point, I’d consider leaving it and making it seem like that was intentional”

While another fan, @theintuitivefox, likened the lack of commitment to his missed putt on 18 at the US Open.

“Can’t even commit to a club throw, let alone a 3 foot downhill slider.”

@StraightTalkSp1 continued the theme of suggesting you either go big or go home on these things, adding:

“In the words of the great Jameis Winston “If we gon do it then, we gon do it big then” You simply can’t not commit to the bit like this”

Going a little further and wanting more bang for his buck, @TrevBacca7 suggested McIlroy should have gone straight for the BMW on display!

“Launching it thru the front window of that BMW would have been all time”

It’s safe to say, then, that fans have sent a message to McIlroy here in that if you’re going to lose your rag a bit, then at least go full throttle!
