It wasn’t to be for Rory McIlroy as he saw his chances of winning the US Open slip through his fingers in heart breaking fashion.
McIlroy missed a short putt on the 18th after playing a stunning chip shot to within a few feet to hand Bryson DeChambeau the chance to win it, which he duly took.
For McIlroy, it was yet another near miss and it now extends his run of not winning majors.
The Northern Irishman had opened up a two shot lead at one point after reeling DeChambeau back in but ultimately fell short with two huge putts from within three feet missed.

Of course, while the celebrations for Bryson were nice to see and he very much deserved the win, it was equally desperate to see McIlroy miss out.
However, McIlroy, despite often being so gracious in defeat, was in no mood to hang around as he was spotted hot-footing it out of Pinehurst before DeChambeau had even signed his card.

Rory McIlroy makes quick US Open exit after losing out to Bryson DeChambeau
Confirmed by a number of journalists, including CBS Golf journalist Kyle Porter, McIlroy immediately packed up his belongings and made a quick getaway from Pinehurst.
There was also video footage of McIlroy making his quick exit to confirm the reports.
Clearly, this one has hurt McIlroy and with just The Open to go in terms of the majors in 2024, it’s hard to see him coming back from such a loss.
Rory McIlroy threw it away
While Bryson DeChambeau got it over the line and made some big shots, this one was one that McIlroy simply chucked away.
He was two shots clear going into the final five holes and then missed an inexcusable putt on 16 which seemed to haunt him for the rest of the round.
McIlroy will know full well he was the reason he lost today and that’s probably why he made such a quick exit from Pinehurst.
Hopefully, he lives to fight another day and that 5th major win isn’t too far away.
But this one does sting and it might well take some coming back from for the Northern Irishman.
