Wyndham Clark is somewhat of a divisive figure on the PGA Tour.
Clark has received plenty of criticism over the past few months due to some of his questionable behaviour during PGA Tour events.
He did himself no favours recently when he was asked when he last had to pay for a round of golf.
Clark said he was shocked when he was made to pay for his round at Troon in Arizona in 2023.
His form on the golf course has been nowhere near good enough recently.
Clark’s so-called ‘weird’ year meant he missed out on the Ryder Cup team, and that would have been a big wake-up call for him.
It will be very much back to the drawing board for the 31-year-old over the course of the next few months.
Wyndham Clark reveals the last time he paid for a golf club
In this era, touring professionals are given golf clubs, balls and apparel whenever they need it.
However, there would have been a time when every single one of them paid for their equipment themselves.
Ahead of the Omega European Masters in Crans-sur-Sierre this week, Clark was asked when he last paid for a golf club with his own money.
He said: “Yes I do remember. It was an Odyssey putter in my rookie year on tour. I didn’t like my putter and I went to a golf shop and bought a putter. I putted with it for half a year.”
Despite the fact that Clark played five events in 2016 and three tournaments in 2017, his rookie year on the PGA Tour was back in the 2018-19 season.
So judging by his comments, Clark last paid for a club around six or seven years ago.
That was actually quite refreshing to hear, because he was a fully fledged PGA Tour pro when he went into a shop and purchased a putter with his own money.
Wyndham Clark’s whirlwind 2025 PGA Tour season was marred by controversy
Clark was embroiled in numerous bouts of controversy throughout the 2025 season.
During the PGA Championship in May, Clark threw his club into a T-Mobile advertising board at Quail Hollow, and he released an apology shortly after the event had finished.
However, things got even worse for the 2023 US Open champion at Oakmont the following month.
Clark damaged the Oakmont lockers during the US Open two months ago and as a result, he has been banned from playing at the course.
He clearly has to manage his emotions better while out on the golf course moving forward.
It could even be argued that Clark has to work just as hard on that as he does on his game throughout the off-season.
