The upcoming Ryder Cup at Bethpage Black is expected to be one of the most fiercely contested match-ups in the history of the competition.

The 2025 Ryder Cup will have to go some in order to match the ‘War on the Shore’ in 1991, but it does have all the ingredients of a colossal duel between the United States and Europe.

The top eight in the current US Ryder Cup points list are locks to be at Bethpage Black.

Scottie Scheffler leads the way, followed by Xander Schauffele, J.J. Spaun, Russell Henley, Bryson DeChambeau, Harris English, Justin Thomas and Collin Morikawa.

That’s where it gets interesting though.

The next four spots are filled by Ben Griffin, captain Keegan Bradley, Maverick McNealy and Brian Harman.

Patrick Cantlay has been in really poor form this season, and he is currently sitting in 14th spot on the points list.

Over the past week, Cantlay has still been tipped to make the Ryder Cup team. However, a new suggestion has now been put forward.

Chris Gotterup backed to beat Patrick Cantlay to the US Ryder Cup team

Over the past two weeks, Chris Gotterup has produced some sensationally good golf.

The 26-year-old has jumped up to 27th in the world rankings, after ending 2024 in 191st spot.

Gotterup won The Scottish Open before finishing third at The Open Championship, earning a cool $2.7 million in the process.

After his top-three finish at The Open, Gotterup admitted that he hasn’t thought too much about the Ryder Cup.

He is now sitting in 22nd position on the US Ryder Cup points list, and Dan Rapaport believes he would be on Bradley’s team, if the competition started tomorrow.

My last spot for the Americans if the Ryder Cup was tomorrow is Chris Gotterup. The guy won The Scottish Open, finished in the top-five in The Open Championship, he’s got youthful energy, he hits it a long way, he’s from the Tri-State area. It just feels like, you know, I don’t have Patrick Cantlay on this team. If it were tomorrow, I would go with Gotterup.

Chris Gotterup vs Patrick Cantlay: 2025 PGA Tour results compared

Gotterup has that all-important win to his name, although he has missed plenty of cuts this season.

Meanwhile, Cantlay is winless, but has only missed playing on the weekend three times this year.

Here is how their 2025 results compare with one another:

So often in the past, the Americans have failed to include in-form players, which has come back to bite them at the Ryder Cup.

If the Ryder Cup was starting tomorrow, Gotterup absolutely should be in the team ahead of Cantlay.

Now it will be fascinating to see how both players perform over the next five weeks or so.
