The Open Championship has only just finished, but many eyes are already turning to the Ryder Cup at Bethpage Black.

Keegan Bradley will captain the American team in September, although his chances of playing at the Ryder Cup haven’t been ruled out.

Luke Donald meanwhile has retained his role as European captain, having guided his side to a superb victory in Rome in 2023.

Jon Rahm has told Donald to consider Sergio Garcia for his next team, which is set to be one of many conundrums for the visiting captain.

His American counterpart meanwhile is doing his best to shape up the hosts, with Bradley confirming Bryson DeChambeau’s Ryder Cup spot after he impressed at The Open.

Ryan Lavner and Rex Hoggard discuss Patrick Cantlay’s potential Ryder Cup place

But one player who really failed to turn up at Royal Portrush was Patrick Cantlay, who finished on three-over and missed the cut.

And following that disappointment, his chances of making the American Ryder Cup team have now been discussed on the Golf Channel Podcast with Rex & Lav.

Ryan Lavner said: “Patrick Cantlay, missed the cut this week. He has not played his best golf really this season and he is not playing his best golf at the worst possible time, like Harris English is doing at the best possible time.

“He has given Keegan Bradley a reason not to put him on that team. I still think Patrick will get on that team but he needs to have some good performances over the next few weeks to do it.”

Rex Hoggard then noted: “He has played pretty well in the Signature Events on the PGA Tour. He has eight top 15 finishes this season but his major championship record in 2025, just a completely lost year.

“Three missed cuts, 36th in The Masters was his best finish. I think I would still put Patrick Cantlay on the US Ryder Cup team but it’s almost exclusively based on his past record, at least in the last 14 competitions.

“He is essentially the American Ian Poulter and I think in a team which is going to have some fresh faces his skillset does make a lot of sense.”

How has Patrick Cantlay performed on the PGA Tour in 2025?

The Ryder Cup qualification standings have been updated for both America and Europe following the conclusion of The Open.

And while it was another poor outing for Cantlay, Bradley will be very satisfied with the tournament as a whole.

His main man Scottie Scheffler lifted the Claret Jug, with his compatriots Harris English and Chris Gotterup finishing second and third respectively.

Wyndham Clark also impressed in T4, while Xander Schauffele finished in T7 as DeChambeau ended his week in T10.

The LIV Golf star was joined on nine-under by Brian Harman and Russell Henley, with Rickie Fowler finishing just a shot behind that American trio.

All may just be desperate to be on that team come September, with Cantlay very likely in the same position.

But he’s done himself no favours with his no-show at The Open, which has largely been the story of his latest major season.

Overall, the American has made the cut 13 times from his 16 appearances on the PGA Tour, with three top 10 finishes to his name.
