Golf Channel’s Hailey Hunter has revealed what two-time Masters champion Scottie Scheffler was doing on the greens during his practice round at Colonial ahead of the Charles Schwab Classic.

The world number one is looking to bounce back after an eventful couple of days at the PGA Championship.

Scheffler was arrested early on Friday morning before going on to card a five-under 66 in his second round at Valhalla.

However, events in Louisville appeared to catch up with the American on Saturday as he played his way out of contention with a two-over 72.

Nevertheless, finishing T8, considering the circumstances, was a remarkable achievement.

Scheffler is featuring in a hometown event this week, which is ideal considering the recent birth of his first child.

Looking for his first win at the Charles Schwab Challenge, the 27-year-old was spotted paying extra attention to the greens at Colonial after suffering with the flat stick in recent years.

Hunter, who watched Scheffler’s practice round, revealed the latest.

She explained: “Scottie Scheffler was out at Colonial Country Club today; in fact, he played an entire 18-hole practice round, teeing off just before 11 am this morning. Scottie is looking for his very first win here at the Charles Schwab Championship. A tied-third finish last year and a runner-up finish the year prior, losing to his good buddy Sam Burns in a playoff.

“While he did have a top-three finish here last year, something he did struggle on was the putting green. He actually gave up four-and-a-half strokes to the rest of the field on the putting greens, so I think that was why that was one of the focuses for him throughout the practice round.”

The Golf Channel journalist said she saw Scheffler hitting a lot of putts from the back of the greens.

She added: “Today I saw him hitting a lot of putts on the green, particularly coming from behind the pin as quite a few of the greens to slope from back to front. That was the focus of his practice round here today.”

Scottie Scheffler to bounce back from Valhalla drama

The Dallas event is the ideal return to action for the Masters champion. He’s near his family and a course where he’s played well previously.

It feels like an important week for the world number one. His third round at Valhalla was uncharacteristic and could well be down to the events that had taken place early on Friday morning.

However, for Scheffler to entirely dispel any questions over his performance, a dominant display at Colonial is required.

The Charles Schwab is the first chance for preparations for the U.S. Open to begin, and it wouldn’t be a surprise to see Scheffler feature regularly between now and June 13.

Having struggled to win events past April during his career, a victory in 2024’s third major would answer plenty of critics.
