Scottie Scheffler has caught up with Hideki Matsuyama at the BMW Championship after he won the St Jude Championship.

Matsuyama felt his St Jude victory slipping away, having endured a torrid spell on his back nine in Memphis.

But Matsuyama recovered with two birdies on the 17th and 18th holes to finish on 17 under, two shots ahead of Viktor Hovland and Xander Schauffele.

Scheffler knew it would be difficult to close out at the St Jude Championship, with the world number one finishing fourth on 14 under.

He has now arrived at the BMW Championship at Castle Pines Golf Club sitting top of the FedExCup points list, as Scheffler was before the St Jude.

Scottie Scheffler congratulates Hideki Matsuyama at the BMW Championship

World number two Schauffele is in second place, with Matsuyama rising to third after his win at TPC Southwind.

The champion has now received congratulations from the leader, with footage emerging on the PGA Tour’s X account of Scheffler approaching Matsuyama and his team.

Scheffler said “nice work” as he shook his caddie’s hand, before bowing to Matsuyama and embracing him with a handshake and hug.

Will Scottie Scheffler and Hideki Matsuyama battle it out at the BMW Championship?

Matsuyama had Taiga Tabuchi on his bag at the St Jude Championship, with his regular caddie Shota Hayafuji having been robbed in London and unable to make it to Memphis.

But it turned out to be a successful pairing, with the duo working well to see off a late challenge from Hovland and Schauffele.

It was the Norwegian who won the trophy last time out, beating Scheffler and Matt Fitzpatrick by two shots.

He could be in contention once more, but Scheffler may be back to his very best this week, while Matsuyama will be full of confidence after his win.

The Japanese star has moved from number eight to number three in the FedExCup points list, while defending champion Hovland remarkably rose from 57th to 16th.
