Joaquin Niemann won his fourth LIV Golf event of the season and the sixth of his career in Virginia last weekend.
Niemann shot an incredible eight-under-par 63 on Sunday at the Robert Trent Jones Golf Club to climb to the top of the leaderboard.
He overtook major champions Graeme McDowell, Bryson DeChambeau, Phil Mickelson, Bubba Watson, and Martin Kaymer in a dramatic final round.
The Mexican might not be the biggest name in golf, but it’s hard to argue that he’s not one of the world’s best players right now.
Rex Hoggard recently explained what Niemann has done even more so than DeChambeau since leaving the PGA Tour.

Rex Hoggard compares Joaquin Niemann’s LIV Golf trajectory with Bryson DeChambeau’s
Many experts have questioned whether abandoning the PGA Tour has been beneficial to the majority of LIV Golf players.
The likes of Brooks Koepka, Dustin Johnson, and Mickelson have all struggled in the major championships since making the controversial move.
The only LIV golfer to step up on the biggest stages is 2024 US Open champion Bryson DeChambeau.
However, Rex Hoggard thinks another player has improved his game more than DeChambeau since joining the tour.
“Bryson has become more of a complete player when you look at his game, but I counter that by saying Joaquin is by far the player who has joined LIV and gotten better,” he said.
“I say that because when he went to LIV, he was a very good player… I didn’t imagine him being a world-beater like he is right now, winning four times in a single season.
Hoggard’s co-host, Ryan Lavner, has been equally surprised by Niemann’s recent rise to stardom on LIV Golf.
“I’m with you. I did not anticipate Joaquin Niemann as a LIV Golf world-beater, but that’s exactly what he has become. He’s a thrill to watch.
“You talk about Cam Young and the shots he can hit… Joaquin Niemann is the exact same. When he’s driving it as he was at [LIV Golf Virginia] down the stretch, it’s on a frozen rope.”
Ryan Lavner says what holds Joaquin Niemann back in the majors
Despite playing so well on LIV, Niemann had found it difficult to translate his form to major championships until recently.
Before the PGA Championship at Quail Hollow, Niemann’s best finish at a major was a tied-16th place at the Masters Tournament.
| Major Championship | Joaquin Niemann’s best finish |
| US Open | T23 |
| The Masters | T16 |
| The PGA Championship | T8 |
| The Open | T53 |
Lavner has explained a potential reason for the Mexican’s shortcomings: “If there’s anything that has held him back at the major championships.
“He tends to have a lower ball flight, and that tends to be problematic at major championships, where some of the pins are tucked and the greens are firmer.
“He has admitted that he has tried to work on that. Obviously, Quail Hollow was a good test for that. He didn’t have a legitimate chance to win that golf tournament on the weekend, but still, a T8 is a T8.”
