Cam Young was the standout star for the US Ryder Cup team at Bethpage Black last week.
Young headed into the Ryder Cup as a rookie, but he showed more heart and genuine quality at Bethpage Black than anyone else on the US team.
After his singles victory on Sunday, Young shared his pride at representing Team USA at the Ryder Cup, and without him, Keegan Bradley would have been in even more trouble than he already was.
The 28-year-old New Yorker showcased his explosive power off the tee, exceptional iron play and most importantly, his unrivalled passion, determination and courage.
He led the US team to what would have been one of the most amazing comebacks of all time with his fantastic play on the final day of the Ryder Cup, but they came up just short in the end.
Young’s golf at the Ryder Cup earned rave reviews from his teammates, golf analysts and the fans.
However, now something has come to light about what the one-time PGA Tour winner did during his practice round at Bethpage on Thursday, and it will undoubtedly raise some eyebrows.
What Cam Young did during Bethpage Black practice round before the Ryder Cup
Without Young at Bethpage, the scores would not have even been close on Sunday.
He injected a certain kind of energy and belief back into the US team with his performances in the four-balls on Friday and both sessions on Saturday.

Then he raised his game even more so on Sunday in the singles when he beat Justin Rose on the final hole after holing a 10-foot putt.
Firstly Brendon de Jonge responded when asked on The 5 Clubs Podcast who he thought was Team USA’s MVP at the Ryder Cup.
He said: “Cam Young was awesome, I was so surprised to not see him in those first matches and it’s even more surprising now after the week he had. Cam Young for me was the big bright spark.“
And then Johnson Wagner chimed in with a really interesting revelation.
Wagner explained: “I watched a bunch of holes with them in practice and Cam Young on Thursday was playing really bad. I watched him play five holes, he didn’t hit a fairway or a green.
“So I wasn’t surprised to see him sit. What was surprising was to see him come out, birdie his first hole, it was amazing, it was awesome.“
That really is a huge shock considering just how good Young was during the Ryder Cup proper.
And it just goes to prove that golf is a sport where form can be gained, and indeed lost, at any particular moment.
Cam Young’s strokes gained stats at the Ryder Cup
Young was ranked second out of all 24 players at Bethpage Black in the strokes gained total category.
Here is how he ranked in all of the separate statistical categories during Ryder Cup week:
| Stats | Young’s totals |
| Strokes gained off the tee | +2.10 – 2nd |
| Strokes gained approach | +3.84 – 2nd |
| Strokes gained around the green | -1.34 – 20th |
| Strokes gained putting | +0.46 – 8th |
| Strokes gained total | +5.06 – 2nd |
Those are some hugely impressive numbers, especially considering the fact that he was a Ryder Cup rookie and had to play under the added pressure of playing in front of his home fans.
The challenge for Young now will be to continue the form that he showed at the Ryder Cup and carry it on into the 2026 PGA Tour season.
He won his first PGA Tour tournament back in August and he will surely go on to win many, many more.
