Tyrrell Hatton came up four strokes short in the final round of the US Open as J.J. Spaun won at Oakmont Country Club.
The 33-year-old’s opening round of 73 (+3) immediately set him back, yet he clawed his way back to just one over par with solid performances on Friday and Saturday.
He was then firmly in contention on Sunday evening, but a few mistakes and missed opportunities meant that he could not catch Spaun.
Despite Hatton’s reputation for showing his frustration, he seemingly took the defeat well as he spoke glowingly about Spaun’s US Open victory.

Tyrrell Hatton comments on J.J. Spaun’s US Open victory
Hatton shared his immediate reaction to Spaun’s US Open win during his post-round interview. “[He’ll be] in shock, I would guess. Unbelievable. Fair play,” he said.
The Englishman then explained that Spaun’s unbelievable putt to win the tournament on the 18th green made him feel a little less disappointed.
“For sure. I’m sad about how I finished, but I’m very happy for J.J., like to win a major in that fashion is amazing,” Hatton added.
“You can’t have.. certainly, I would hate for anyone to have any negativity towards that.”
Indeed, it was an eventful final round, with plenty of controversy, but nobody should take anything away from Spaun’s incredible achievement.

Tyrrell Hatton calls Robert MacIntyre ‘amazing’ after US Open
Hatton also complimented US Open runner-up and European Ryder Cup teammate Robert MacIntyre in his interview.
MacIntyre had the best day of anyone in the top five (-2), but it was not enough for the Scotsman to add another national open to his resume.
“He’s had a fantastic week,” Hatton shared. “Finishing second on his own. He’s an amazing player. He won in Canada and the Scottish Open last year, with his dad on the bag in Canada, and winning his home Open was pretty epic and cool to see.
“He’s a great guy and someone that I have a lot of respect for. He’s had an amazing week. I’m sure he’ll be disappointed with how he’s just missed out, but he’s played amazing.”
It’s always great to see sportsmanship from players, but in this case, especially from a European Ryder Cup team perspective. Perhaps the pair will play together at Bethpage later this year.
