Tyrrell Hatton has a share of the lead after day one of the DP World Tour Championship at Jumeirah Golf Estates Earth Course.
Hatton massively boosted his Ryder Cup chances at last week’s Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship, where he finished runner-up to eventual winner Paul Waring.
The Englishman’s impressive form shows no sign of letting up, and Hatton currently sits five under and tied with Rory McIlroy after day one in Dubai.
| DP WORLD TOUR CHAMPIONSHIP ROUND ONE – 2024 | TOTAL | |
| 1 | HATTON, Tyrrell | -5 |
| 1 | MCILROY, Rory | -5 |
| 2 | WARING, Paul | -4 |
| 3 | NAKAJIMA, Keita | -3 |
| 3 | SCOTT, Adam | -3 |
| 3 | FITZPATRICK, Alex | -3 |
| 3 | WALLACE, Matt | -3 |
Hatton made seven birdies, including four on his back nine. The 33-year-old, however, raised two issues about the Earth Course after his opening round.
Tyrrell Hatton’s two DP World Tour issues

Speaking to Sky Sports after Thursday’s play, Hatton initially claimed the greens were slower than expected.
“I don’t know how the weather has been over here, but the greens are definitely slower than they were in the past,” Hatton said. “Because they are slower, the grain probably takes the ball a bit more, so then they don’t roll, maybe as well as they have done previously.”
The LIV Golf star also had a complaint about the fairways. “The fairways are a little bit weird as well,” Hatton added. “I know the rough is up, so if you do miss the fairways, it is hard, but the fairways are quite awkward to play off.
“Even on the last, I hit a nice wedge shot and got a flyer off the fairway. You are not really playing for that, so you need a little bit of luck in terms of how we expect our distances to be, and I guess it’s not quite coming off as we think.”
Can Tyrrell Hatton win a major in 2025?
Hatton’s debut season on LIV couldn’t have gone any better. The Englishman finished fourth in the individual standings and clinched his first win in Nashville.
The move to the breakaway venture appears to have taken Hatton’s game to the next level, and the evidence has been there for all to see upon his return to the DP World Tour.
The 33-year-old has competed on multiple occasions during the autumn stretch of the season. Furthermore, Hatton won the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship, which was played on three of Scotland’s most iconic courses.
| Player | Rounds played | Strokes gained per round |
| Jon Rahm | 16 | +2.87 |
| Rory McIlroy | 30 | +2.59 |
| Tommy Fleetwood | 30 | +2.03 |
| Tyrrell Hatton | 22 | +1.97 |
| Billy Horschel | 13 | +1.86 |
When it comes to strokes gained, only Tommy Fleetwood, McIlroy and Jon Rahm have registered better strokes gained on the DP World Tour this season.
Hatton often gets overlooked when discussions about elite players emerge. There’s no doubt the LIV man is among the game’s best right now and could be a threat in all of 2025’s major championships.
