Tyrrell Hatton has given himself a real chance to win the BMW PGA Championship for a second time in his career after producing a stunning round of 64 on Saturday at Wentworth.

A two under par front nine during the third round provided little indication of the fireworks which were to come from Tyrrell Hatton.

Hatton – who won the BMW PGA Championship back in 2020 – made six birdies after the turn to leave himself just two shots back of Alex Noren and Adrien Saddier. The Englishman will join the pair in the final group on Sunday.

The LIV Golf star has won a number of the biggest events on the DP World Tour during his career, with five Rolex Series victories to his name already. So he will certainly not have any concerns about how he will perform under the spotlight.

The 33-year-old is someone who appears to be so comfortable with where his game is. Of course, many know Hatton for his bursts of frustration out on the golf course, but he knows that fire helps make him the competitor he is.

He also has an interesting way of taking distance off his shots. During his interview with Sky Sports after Saturday’s round, Hatton was asked about his sumptuous approach on 11 in which he could be seen holding the club well down the grip.

“I call it my double grip down,” he said. “I can’t really slow my tempo down very well and take distance off. So I found gripping down the club for me helps me do that.

“So yeah, I have a normal shot, a grip down and then a double with the wedges, and that just helps me take off six yards depending on the shot.”

Tyrrell Hatton looks ready to shine at the Ryder Cup as he puts himself in the mix at the BMW PGA Championship

Hatton is one of the players on Luke Donald‘s team who has an awareness of what an away Ryder Cup entails. And he will know that he is likely to be one of the targets for the American fans given how he does struggle to hide his emotions.

But his statistics from the third round at Wentworth should provide real encouragement for anyone with European allegiances.

Stereotypically, Ryder Cups are so often decided by which team holes the most putts. And Hatton was second on the greens on Saturday, having taken just 24 putts throughout the day.

He has already made 18 birdies across the first three days. His 64 on Saturday also marked his best ever round at Wentworth.

Hatton is arguably sending a clear message to his captain that he is ready to play a big part as Europe look to become the first away side to win the Ryder Cup since 2012.
