Tommy Fleetwood is tied for the lead heading into the weekend at the Travelers Championship.

Amazingly, Fleetwood is still yet to win on the PGA Tour, although he does have seven DP World Tour victories to his name.

The 34-year-old is a hugely popular character on both sides of the Atlantic, although that might not be the case at the Ryder Cup in September!

Fleetwood was at Bethpage Black recently and he has said that he cannot wait to experience the atmosphere that the New York crowd create.

As things stand, Fleetwood is sitting inside the top six of the Team Europe Ryder Cup rankings.

And even if the Englishman doesn’t qualify automatically, he will definitely be at Bethpage.

A win at the Travelers Championship would guarantee his place in the European team for the Ryder Cup though.

Fleetwood made two eagles during his back nine on Friday, and he was absolutely delighted with his performance.

He said: I’m not sure I’ve had one on nine for a while. Yeah, so 13, wind was flickering off the right, I hit mini-driver off the tee, felt like it was the widest point. Again, those crosswinds where you start — you get around that point and you’re obviously waiting a little bit and the wind goes from across to into to down, and I just sort of caught the right moment to hit a 9-wood from I think — I had like 264 pin, but the minimum that I had to carry on the left was 240 something, so I knew if the 9-wood was turning, it was going to be fine. Came off perfect and then beautiful putt.

Then 15, the tee shot there was unbelievable looking at it, and it pitched right into that upslope, and I was a bit gutted where it pitched and then chipped it in. Would have been happy walking off — obviously walking off with two birdies, but two eagles was a big bonus.

A key club for Fleetwood during round two was his 9-wood, and he used it to great effect on the 13th hole when he fired his second shot in close before holing the eagle putt.

And Fleetwood was asked why he carries a 9-wood in his bag.

He said: 9-wood I’ve had for two seasons now. At the moment, like this week, I don’t have a 4-iron in. Like 4-iron and 9-wood go very similar distance, within five yards of each other, obviously very different performing clubs. So it replaced the 4-iron. Sometimes I’ll have it in and I’ll take a wedge out. My bag is always sort of changing. But I do feel like this week is a very good course for it.

A journalist then asked how many head-covers he has in his bag.

Fleetwood responded: Four and a putter so far, really. Getting more and more. I don’t know, there’s another season coming back next season; 5-iron might be out. See what comes up next.

The Englishman then responded when asked if he’s open to trying an 11-wood.

He said: No, I haven’t been offered an 11-wood head yet, but believe me, if one comes out I’ll be the first to try it.

It is incredible to see how the game has evolved over the past year or so, with the majority of players opting for lofted fairway woods.

Tommy Fleetwood’s PGA Tour record

It really is unbelievable how Fleetwood still hasn’t won on the PGA Tour.

Here is how his numbers look throughout the years on the PGA Tour:

Fleetwood needs to putt more aggressively during the final two rounds of tournaments.

He misses far too many putts on the low side when the pressure is on.

If Fleetwood approaches the final two rounds of the Travelers Championship with real positivity, then he has every chance of breaking his duck in America.
