Tommy Fleetwood might not have qualified for the European Ryder Cup team yet, but he will undoubtedly be at Bethpage Black in September.

Fleetwood is a hugely popular player on both sides of the Atlantic, but he won’t have the support of the American fans in three months’ time during the Ryder Cup.

As things stand, Fleetwood is sitting inside the top six of the Team Europe Ryder Cup rankings.

The 34-year-old has been a part of three Ryder Cup teams, and he played a key role for Europe during their wins in 2018 and 2023.

Fleetwood is a hugely experienced player, and will be a big influence behind the scenes for Team Europe, as well as out on the golf course.

However, it seems like he slightly underestimated the nature of the New York crowd before being put right by his friend recently.

Tommy Fleetwood makes Bethpage crowd claim ahead of the Ryder Cup

Fleetwood probably hasn’t played at too many golf courses throughout his life where the fans have been rooting against him.

However, that will be the case in September when he turns up at Bethpage Black with Team Europe for the 45th instalment of the Ryder Cup.

Fleetwood – who is still waiting for his first PGA Tour win – spoke to SiriusXM PGA Tour radio about the upcoming Ryder Cup in New York.

And he explained how a recent trip to Bethpage Black went for him.

Fleetwood said, I was at Bethpage recently, I did a bit of filming. I played the other course, the Red Course, but I saw a lot of people there. I came off and I was with one of my friends who lives in New York, and I said, ‘do you know what, I think I can win the New York crowd over’, and he went, ‘you can’t’ (laughter). It will be great, really, really excited about what the atmosphere will be like. Hopefully I can make it, enjoy it, and go there as a team and do our best, bring the Ryder Cup back home, and just looking forward to the atmosphere that everybody can create.

The crowd will be boisterous, vociferous and incredibly loud all in support of Team USA in September, as they look to help their team bring the Ryder Cup back to America.

Ryder Cup results since the turn of the century

Incredibly, Europe have won eight out of the last 11 instalments of the Ryder Cup.

Keegan Bradley and his team will be desperate to turn the table on the Europeans in September.

As you can see from those results, Europe have dominated the Ryder Cup over the past 25 years.

Team USA will be desperate to change all of that this year.

The New York crowd will do everything they can to make the experience for Fleetwood and his European teammates as unpleasant as possible.
