World number ten Tommy Fleetwood has a new club in the bag ahead of this week’s Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship.

The Englishman has enjoyed an excellent run of form of late, finishing in the top three at the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship and Spanish Open.

Despite his excellent form, Fleetwood has been frustrated with his game, and the 33-year-old has now revealed a change he’s made to his putter ahead of the HSBC Championship.

Fleetwood has been working on his putting this season, and now the seven-time DP World Tour winner has switched to a brand new TaylorMade model for this week’s event.

Speaking during his media duties on Wednesday, Fleetwood revealed that he’s been working with the new flat stick at home and that he’s using it for the first time at Yas Links.

“It is a new putter,” Fleetwood said. “It is a new TaylorMade putter that I’ve been working with at home. And yeah, like the guys at TaylorMade, they have done an amazing job like we spoke about, designing something like a little bit different.

“It’s felt really, really good. It was the perfect time for me to be practising with something. It’s sort of difficult these days. I love testing like my equipment and testing things that are new and different, but it’s so difficult with the way the schedule is. The tournaments are packed in so close to each other, and there’s not a big event or not an important event, it seems.”

Fleetwood continued: “To have that time at home to work on something that I’ve put a lot of effort into and something I’m really interested in; and like I said, TaylorMade have done an amazing job with it, and it’s felt good. Looking forward to going out there tomorrow and getting it in competition because that’s the only thing I haven’t done yet, so that’s exciting.”

Tommy Fleetwood 2024 PGA Tour putting statistics

Those who putt well tend to be in contention more often than not and, crucially, close out tournaments. Fleetwood’s putting during the 2024 PGA Tour season has been good, but there’s definite room for improvement.

When it comes to strokes gained, the Englishman is inside the top 90 but still losing 0.83 shots per round to the best on tour, Taylor Montgomery.

Another worrying statistic for Fleetwood is his birdie or better conversion rate. Currently, the Englishman is converting 29.22% of his birdie or eagle attempts, which is 8% lower than tour leader Sam Burns. It may seem like a small percentage, but throughout a tournament, Fleetwood’s failure to capitalise will cause him issues.

Hopefully, with a new putter in hand, Fleetwood can finally start to make the most of what has been an impressive run of form since the Olympics at Le Golf National.
