Korean star Tom Kim was involved in a controversial incident during the final round of the St Jude Championship, and the 22-year-old has since broken his silence.

Kim agonisingly missed out on qualification for the BMW Championship after finishing just outside the FedEx Cup top 50.

The Korean looked under severe pressure during his final round and carded back-to-back double bogeys to card a one-over-par 71. Kim’s frustration appeared to reach boiling point on the 12th, however.

Kim angered golf fans after slamming his putter on the green of the 406-yard par-four. The 22-year-old massively dented the putting surface and subsequently failed to prepare the damage.

Now, Kim has finally issued an apology.

Kim wrote on Instagram: “Hi everyone. It’s been brought to my attention about my frustration shown on the 12th green.

“I will never lie to my peers and fans because I have too much respect and gratitude towards them. I wasn’t aware that I had made that big of a damage on the green because if I did, I would’ve never just left without repairing it, but I was clearly wrong and will take full responsibility for my actions and will be better going forward.

“Thank you, and I apologise again. Thank you for your support throughout the year.”

Tom Kim makes the right PR call after the St Jude Championship

After agonisingly missing out on the FedEx Cup playoffs, it would’ve taken a lot for Kim to post a public apology, so this is highly admirable.

Kim is one of the more popular players on tour and is good friends with world number one Scottie Scheffler.

It feels like the Korean has been around for a long time, which perhaps causes fans and pundits to forget his tender age. His career is still in its infancy, and clearly, he has a lot to learn.

Of course, the world’s elite players all get frustrated from time to time. But it’s learning to manage difficult moments and come out the other side in better shape.
