The Wyndham Championship is in the bag and while Cam Young finally got his first PGA Tour win, there was less enthusiasm for others in the field.

With crucial FedEx Cup points on the line, the pressure was really on as a number of players hovered around that dreaded 70th place mark.

One of those players was Australian star, Cam Davis.

Having battled all season to get himself into the FedEx spots, Davis was left sweating as a disastrous triple bogey on the 11th hole bumped him down the field and within touching distance of the dropzone.

In the end, Davis managed to cling on for dear life, finishing in 69th position to just get over the line as Davis Thompson missed a crucial putt to potentially knock him out.

Still, despite getting into the top 70, Davis was in a sombre mood as he awaited his fate afterwards.

Cam Davis says why he’d had enough halfway through the Wyndham Championship

It must be gut-wrenching playing out your final round in before the FedEx gets going and not fully knowing if you’ve made it or not.

At the time, Davis was at serious risk of dropping out and it looked at one point like he would end up just dipping below 70th.

As we know now, it didn’t matter in the end as others helped his cause but at the time of media duty after his round, Davis suggested he was ready to give things up for the season.

“I feel tired,” he admitted. “I’ve pushed really hard for the last few months and it’s not led to any better golf. I’ve had a couple of little bright moments, but you can probably count on one hand since April.

“So I’m almost pretty much ready to put the clubs away for a little bit and just rest my brain and work on that as well because I would say that more than anything else has been the thing that I’ve found the hardest to get on top of.

“Yeah, either way, whether I get to play next week or not, I’m looking forward to the time
after that where I can put the feet up.”

The big names to miss out on the top 70 for the FedEx Cup

While Cam Davis managed to sneak in, a few select others were not so lucky and the top 70 is missing some big names.

As mentioned, Davis Thompson missed out, as did Gary Woodland and the usually reliable Byeong Hun An.

But beyond that, some surprise names missed out. The Hojgaard twins were among them, while Max Homa, Keith Mitchell, and Alex Noren were another three good players to not make the cut.

Another former Ryder Cup player, Sam Burns, also failed to get near the top 70 and the popular Sahith Theegala got nowhere near as well.

So, while Davis might have been downbeat at the end of his round, things could have been a lot worse for him.
