Presidents Cup talk has taken centre stage after Mike Weir and Jim Furyk named their 12-man teams for the event at Royal Montreal Golf Club, which starts on September 26.
The 12-man United States Team includes the likes of Scottie Scheffler, Xander Schauffele and Collin Morikawa. Furthermore, Max Homa and Keegan Bradley were the notable names added to the renewal via Furyk’s picks.
For the International Team, Hideki Matsuyama, Adam Scott, and Tom Kim are the standouts as Mike Weir’s men target their first win since 1998.
However, as excitement builds, Tiger Woods’ former coach, Hank Haney, has slammed the biennial event, brandishing the Presidents Cup as a ‘joke’.
Hank Haney slams Presidents Cup after teams announced

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Haney ravaged the event, suggesting that it was nothing more than a money-making scheme by the PGA Tour.
“I have to admit, I love picking on the Presidents Cup,” Haney said. “It is the absolute biggest joke of an event. I am listening to the radio. The Sirius XM PGA Tour radio they’ve got to hype up the Presidents Cup; this is a PGA Tour event.
“They came up with the Presidents Cup to rip off the players and make some money. Now, they’ll say the money goes into the pool, and the players end up getting the money. Maybe they do, maybe they don’t.
He added: “The players play for free, and they do this once every two years. They sell this whole shooting match to NBC. This has turned into a practice round for the Ryder Cup. What this mostly is – is just a money grab.”
The Presidents Cup could be made more competitive
Considering the USA win the Presidents Cup pretty much every single year, moves could be made to make the competition more competitive.
Perhaps the International Team playing the European side to gain more experience could be an option. Or looking to incorporate some of LIV Golf’s talent into the fold.
Cameron Smith and Joaquin Niemann would improve Weir’s team tenfold. Yet, due to strict qualification criteria, those on the breakaway tour must make do with a watching berth.
Adding LIV players to the Presidents Cup would undoubtedly drive interest and improve the overall product; the authorities should consider it.
