The WM Phoenix Open could be set for a barnstorming finish this weekend with Jordan Spieth back in contention to win a PGA Tour event.
With Thomas Detry leading by five strokes, Spieth and the rest of the chasing pack face an uphill battle but the three-time major winner will be delighted to within a chance of winning.
Spieth hasn’t won on the PGA Tour since 2022 and after coming back from wrist surgery, he’ll be delighted to be in the mix.
Spieth, of course, has also been in the headlines recently after he received an invite for the Genesis Invitational next week.
At the time, golf fans slammed the TOUR’s decision to invite Spieth, with his lack of form and wins cited as a key reason behind why he should have been left out.
However, just a week or so on, the PGA Tour look more justified than ever with Spieth roaring back to form.

Jordan Spieth proves the PGA Tour were right with WM Phoenix Open showing
In fairness to those golf fans calling the decision on Spieth out, this is a player who is nearly three years without a win and there are others playing far better right now.
However, the 31-year-old very much showed his class, especially in round three, as he went the whole 18 holes without carding a bogey.
That included a stunning up and down on the 18th when he looked in danger in the bunker and the putt he holed was reminiscent of the form he showed back in 2015 when he went on his major run.
Spieth will need to find another bogey free round to get near Thomas Detry in round four but anything can happen in golf and Spieth himself has been on the receiving end of a few big meltdowns.
What Jordan Spieth has said about scoring at the WM Open
With Thomas Detry admitting the softer greens made for low scoring, Jordan Spieth has also spoken on how you can quickly get hot or cold around TPC Scottsdale.
Discussing his round three performance, Spieth admitted that the WM Open can be ‘crazy’ in terms of putting a score together.
“Yeah, it’s crazy. Here four shots can be made up in four holes. It’s also hard to make up shots if somebody is on their game because look at what Nick did last year. Charley came through, I was playing with Charley, he posted an unbelievable score and then Nick came through and somehow won the golf tournament,” Spieth said.
“When someone is on, they’re on, but you can also have some bad breaks. Rickie has had it. Hideki has had it here where he hit some great shots that don’t end up in the perfect spots. Tomorrow the pins will be a little harder in the closing stretch than they were today.
“15 and 17 I think will be quite a bit harder. It might not yield 5-under in the last six. But it’s all about just controlling emotions, giving yourself looks.”
With a potential victory in sight, Spieth will be hoping to have saved his best until last and finally get that winning feeling again.
