The FedEx Cup fall stretch of the PGA Tour season has certainly divided opinion among fans and commentators.
Starting at the Procore Championship, the fall offers players a chance to jostle for position inside the FedEx Cup 125 and earn full PGA Tour cards for the following season.
The Sanderson Farms Championship, Black Desert Championship, Shriners Children’s Open, and ZOZO Championship have all passed, and the WWT Championship is the next stop on the schedule.
The FedEx Cup fall format has been criticised of late, particularly after last week’s ZOZO Championship was a reduced field event, preventing some players from improving their FedEx Cup position.
The fall format has changed in recent years, and Rickie Fowler has predicted further alterations moving forward.
With fan interest around the fall relatively low and the current format hardly captivating, CBS journalist Kyle Porter has suggested a move which could improve the product in the coming years.
Players Championship PGA Tour change suggested

Speaking during the latest edition of Smylie Kaufman’s Smylie Show, Porter suggested that moving The Players Championship toward the end of the season could prove an astute decision.
“The best thing the PGA Tour has or the best property it has. It’s not even close for me. It’s the Players Championship,” Porter said. “The Players Championship is extraordinary. It’s amazing. In terms of my interest in intrigue, it’s right up there with a major. Call it whatever you want, but I am locked in like I am during US Open week.
“Is there a way you can lean into that at the end of the PGA Tour year? That’s weird as it’s in March, so it’s a weird time. Do you move it? I don’t know what the answer is to that.
“When you have something that is that good for any business, the best thing is to double down on it. But from a scheduling perspective, that is an uphill battle against four or five other organisations you are trying to work with.”
PGA Tour must rethink FedEx Cup fall
The current PGA Tour fall schedule needs a rethink. Right now, the current guise is just an extended version of Q-School with an elevated event – ZOZO Championship – wedged into the middle.
Perhaps moving a big event, like The Players, to after the Tour Championship would provide some excitement.
What’s more, lesser-known fall events could be used as a route for players outside the dotted line to work their way into a higher-profile event, which would eventually decide PGA Tour status for the falling year.
Of course, there’s the argument that The Players is the perfect tournament to kickstart an exciting stretch of the season that includes The Masters and PGA Championship. Nevertheless, change is required in order to re-energise what has become a largely stale product.
