Patrick Reed endured a difficult opening round of the US Open at Oakmont, but it did involve a superb albatross.

Reed qualified for the US Open with his top 60 place in the Official World Golf Ranking, and he now sits level with world number one Scottie Scheffler in Pennsylvania.

Both Reed and Scheffler carded three-over 73s on Thursday, leaving them sitting T49 in the early leaderboard.

Defending champion Bryson DeChambeau joins the pair on three-over, along with Ryder Cup captain Keegan Bradley.

A handful of other players are also in T49 heading into round two of the US Open, such as Gary Woodland and Tyrrell Hatton.

But Reed stands out from that crowd thanks to his albatross, which he recorded on the par-five fourth hole at Oakmont.

And as noted by LIV Golf on X, it is just the fourth albatross in the history of the US Open, and the first in 13 years.

T.C. Chen was the first to achieve the impressive feat since records began with his effort at Oakland Hills C.C. back in 1985.

Shaun Micheel followed in his footsteps at Pebble Beach in 2010, with Nick Watney joining the exclusive group at The Olympic Club in 2012.

How has Patrick Reed performed on LIV Golf ahead of the US Open?

Reed is among 14 LIV Golf players attempting to lift the US Open trophy this week, in a field dominated by PGA Tour players.

But his fellow LIV Golf player Brooks Koepka is certainly in the mix after round one, with the American sitting T3.

He carded an opening round two-under 68 at Oakmont, and is just two shots behind early leader J.J. Spaun.

Reed will be looking to improve upon his latest major championship outing, having missed the cut at the PGA Championship.

But that was after he finished third at The Masters, a tournament he won by one shot over Rickie Fowler in 2018.

Meanwhile on LIV Golf, he occupies 18th place in the individual standings, recently finishing T23 in Virginia.
