PGA National has hosted some of golf’s biggest names over the years. In 2012, the course was the scene of an epic battle between Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy.

13 years ago, Woods fired his lowest-ever final round on the PGA Tour to pile the pressure on McIlroy. The Northern Irishman held his nerve, however. McIlroy rose to world number one after his victory at the Honda Classic (now the Cognizant Classic).

Elsewhere, in 2018, Justin Thomas beat Luke List in a dramatic playoff after the pair finished the tournament at eight under. Back in 2023, Chris Kirk also won the tournament in extra holes.

PGA National is prone to a bit of excitement, and Corey Pavin’s 1992 victory at the Honda Classic produced one of the all-time great Tour moments.

Playing the par-five 18th, Pavin knew an eagle was required to force a playoff with Fred Couples.

136 yards out, Pavin slammed dunked his eight iron straight into the cup, sparking wild celebrations. Both players would then par the first playoff hole before the 1995 US Open champ made a birdie on the second extra hole to win his tenth PGA Tour event.

Speaking after his one-of-a-kind victory, Pavin said: “Well, it’s just an eight-iron. It just went in the hole. It’s no big deal. Don’t you think?”

“I’ve flown a couple in before but never in the 18th hole or 72nd hole of a tournament to have a chance to win. So it’s a little unique.”

Most dramatic ending in PGA Tour history

Pavin’s win at the Honda Classic was undoubtedly one of the most dramatic in PGA Tour history. However, there have been many others.

Keegan Bradley trailed Jason Dufner by five shots with just four holes left of the 2011 PGA Championship at Atlanta Athletic Club. Bradley would pick up shots on 16 and 17, only for Dufner to bogey three of his final four holes.

The now US Ryder Cup captain would birdie the second hole of the three-hole playoff and win, to date, his only major championship.

Tiger Woods’ 2000 PGA Championship win was another of golf’s epic finales. During a three-hole playoff with Bob May, Woods walked in a birdie putt in what was an iconic golfing moment at Valhalla.
