Ripper GC enjoyed a season to remember on the LIV Golf League after Cam Smith’s Aussie quartet clinched the Team Championship in Dallas.
Smith doesn’t regret his heavily criticised move to LIV and was one of the standout performers during the 2024 season. The former Open winner finished seventh in the individual standings.
In addition to Smith’s performance, Lucas Herbert, Matt Jones and Marc Leishman all stepped up to deliver a memorable Ripper GC victory in Dallas.
The Aussie team captured the imagination of fans in 2024, particularly during the Adelaide event, where they also triumphed. Now, Smith has spoken about how Ripper came into existence and revealed what the Australian team could’ve been called instead.
LIV Golf: What Ripper GC could have been called

Talking on Mark Bouris’ Straight Talk Podcast, Smith explained how the team name ‘Ripper’ came into existence.
“It was a process, to be honest,” Smith explained. “There were three or four to choose from, and I felt like Ripper was so Australian. There was no other choice. We had some other names.
“The Outlaws was one of them, and I was like, ah, it’s a bit corny. But Ripper, something about it, it’s in our language, so I loved it, and there was no other name for me that I ever thought about.”
LIV Golf must follow Ripper GC success
The future of LIV Golf remains unclear, with the PIF and PGA Tour reportedly close to a $1bn merger agreement. But if the league’s long-term future is stabilised, replicating Ripper’s success should be a top priority.
The Aussie quartet are probably the most popular team on the circuit, with those down under completely behind their players. Therefore, looking to emulate Ripper’s popularity in other nations is a must.
Currently, teams are made up of several nationalities, which makes it hard for supporters to form any real ties and be genuinely concerned about results.
Rumours emerged of a Scandinavian side being formed, and it wouldn’t be a surprise to see LIV push their stars to reconfigure their four-man rosters with nations in mind going forward. Given that the team aspect has yet to fully engage fans, it’s a move that could well be worth exploring.
