Jordan Spieth suffered major disappointment by missing out on the top-50 in the FedEx Cup points list after his lacklustre performance at the St. Jude Championship last week.
Spieth experienced his fair share of bad luck on the PGA Tour in 2025, after battling multiple different injuries and struggling to find any kind of consistency in his game as a result.
The 32-year-old finished in 54th position in the FedEx Cup standings after the St. Jude Championship, and his season is now over, unless he decides to play any of the fall events, of course.
There is a theory that Spieth missing out on the final two FedEx Cup Playoff events, and indeed the Ryder Cup in September, could actually be a good thing for him.
That would allow him the opportunity to completely reset, work hard on his game during the off-season, and come back a better player in 2026.
Spieth said that he is still hopeful of making the Ryder Cup team a couple of weeks ago, but that dream seems to be dead in the water now.
So does the three-time major champion need to go back to the drawing board during the off-season, or just carry on along the path he’s currently heading?
Smylie Kaufman tells Jordan Spieth what to do next as his PGA Tour season ends
Spieth now has a decision to make.

Does he completely start from scratch in the off-season and work on something entirely new?
Does he play some events in the fall, or take the next few months off before returning to PGA Tour action in January?
Smylie Kaufman has explained what he thinks the 13-time PGA Tour winner should do during the off-season, when speaking on the Smylie Show.
He said: “I don’t see Jordan playing a ton. He very well play a couple events if he feels like he needs to.
“But he’s a player, it just feels like, it’s just hard to believe that any Signature Event wouldn’t want Jordan to go and play.
“I know that goes against everybody’s opinion of what the PGA Tour is. That would be more of a closed shop type of a system, and that’s what all the LIV people against the PGA Tour, but then don’t have sponsors exemptions, you know!
“We’ll see on that. Bummer for Jordan not to get through. He’s a guy that feels he would take two steps forward and then one step back. He never had that crazy good round this year and it never felt like he was able to put an entire tournament together. He never quite got into contention.
“He will need to, not going back to the drawing board, it’s just to continue to show up next year with the confidence that this is my DNA, this is what I’m going to do, and not tweak too much and to just go and play creative golf and trust that his stuff is good enough.“
One issue that Jordan Spieth must fix ahead of the 2026 PGA Tour season
Spieth has actually shown some really positive signs in 2025.
He drove the ball particularly well on the whole, and ended up 32nd in the strokes gained off the tee category.
However, he putted so poorly throughout the 2025 season, and was ranked way down in 64th position in strokes gained on the greens.
| Stats | Spieth’s rank |
| Strokes gained off the tee | 32nd |
| Strokes gained approach | 57th |
| Strokes gained around the greens | 33rd |
| Strokes gained putting | 64th |
| Strokes gained total | 15th |
Spieth needs to sharpen up his iron play ahead of the new season as well.
However, judging by those statistics, it could be argued that he was very lucky to miss out on the field for the BMW Championship.
15th in strokes gained total is a sign that he was perhaps closer to his best this year than everyone thought he was.
