The PGA Tour has rolled into town in Detroit for the Rocket Classic this week.

The Rocket Classic is a big opportunity for some of the lesser-known names on the PGA Tour to shine.

That said, there are still some top-ranked players in the field at Detroit Golf Club, including Collin Morikawa, Keegan Bradley and Hideki Matsuyama.

A real element of intrigue to the tournament is the fact that James Piot has received a sponsor invite to play the Rocket Classic – the first time a former LIV player has ever played a PGA Tour event.

The scoring is always incredibly low at Detroit Golf Club, so there should be plenty of excitement for the spectators this week.

However, there was some bad news that emerged from Detroit before the start of the tournament.

Tony Finau releases statement after Rocket Classic withdrawal

2022 Rocket Classic champion Tony Finau will unfortunately not be at the Detroit Golf Club this week.

Finau has withdrawn from the event, but not because of a specific injury.

The man from Salt Lake City, Utah, took to his official Instagram account to explain why he won’t be competing at the Rocket Classic this week.

Finau said, Hey Detroit, you know I love the 313 and am proud to be the 2022 Champ of the Community’s Classic! This tournament and this community mean a lot to me so I’m bummed to share that I won’t be competing this week due to some needed rest and recovery. I know you will all have a blast this week and I hope to be back in the 313 in the years to come! All my best to everyone competing this week and to all involved in this great tournament.

It is an extremely busy part of the schedule right now, so it’s no surprise that Finau needs to rest and recuperate ahead of some vitally important events on the other side of the Atlantic.

Finau has been struggling desperately with his putting over the past few months, so perhaps some time off will do him good.

Tony Finau’s 2025 PGA Tour stats

Finau has regressed badly in 2025.

Here is how his stats look this season:

StatRank
Strokes gained off the tee107th
Strokes gained approach77th
Strokes gained scrambling130th
Strokes gained putting121st
Strokes gained total87th

The 35-year-old has clearly been struggling with all aspects of his game, but his putting and scrambling are the two areas where he obviously needs to improve the most.

Withdrawing from the Rocket Classic would have been an incredibly difficult decision for Finau to make.

However, he’ll be hoping that it pays dividends for him in the long-run.
