So it seems like a former LIV golfer will be teeing it up on the PGA Tour this week at the Rocket Mortgage Classic.

The Rocket Mortgage Classic is a very well-supported event on the PGA Tour and Detroit Golf Club has played host to some really popular winners over the past six years or so.

Bryson DeChambeau, Tony Finau and Rickie Fowler can all call themselves Rocket Mortgage Classic champions.

Cameron Davis won the Rocket Mortgage Classic last year, and he will be back to defend his title this time around.

There are some big name players in the field, including Collin Morikawa, Patrick Cantlay, Keegan Bradley and Hideki Matsuyama.

However, one other lesser-known golfer who is playing will be watched very closely and with real interest.

James Piot to play on the PGA Tour at the Rocket Mortgage Classic

Anyone remember James Piot?

The 26-year-old won the US Amateur back in 2021 after he defeated Austin Greaser 2&1 in the final at Oakmont Country Club.

Big things were expected of him, but he only played six PGA Tour events before joining LIV Golf as one of the original participants in the inaugural 2022 season.

However, Piot was relegated from LIV Golf in 2023, after spending time on the HyFlyers team.

He must be regretting his decision to link up with the Saudi-backed golf league now, and this week in Detroit will be a huge opportunity for him to get his career back on track.

Piot is still waiting for his first professional win, and who knows, maybe it could come this week.

He is a graduate from Michigan State University, so he’ll have plenty of support at Detroit Golf Club this week.

Hopefully for Piot’s sake, he is able to play well this week and take full advantage of the break he has received.

Why is James Piot allowed to return to the PGA Tour after LIV spell?

Mark Hollis – part of the Rocket Group leadership – made a phone-call to Piot on Monday to tell him that he had received a sponsor’s invite.

He explained how pleased he is to have given an opportunity to a fellow Michigan State alum, as quoted by Detroit News.

Hollis said: There was a lot of support, and it was one of the happiest calls I’ve made. He’s somebody we wanted in from the get-go as we were going through the process.

“It had to play out the way it played out.

So, why is he allowed back on the PGA Tour, having spent a year with LIV Golf?

Well, despite the fact that Piot played six PGA Tour events, he never had any status, nor was he a member of the Tour.

The 26-year-old has got really lucky this week after receiving a sponsors invite to play at the Rocket Mortgage Classic.

However, whether he will be able to take advantage of that break remains to be seen.
