The arrival of LIV Golf might have been a positive for some but when it comes to players playing in the majors, it has certainly impacted more than a few stars.

With the OWGR still not recognising LIV Golf events as part of its accumulation of points, many LIV players have suffered from dropping down the rankings.

Only a select few star players with a rich history or recent wins in majors like Phil Mickelson, Jon Rahm and Brooks Koepka, have been able to regularly compete in all four majors.

Indeed, one man who has suffered from a lack of majors since making the move to LIV is Australian golfer, Marc Leishman.

Leishman hasn’t competed in a major since 2022 and he missed out on The Open last year after failing in a qualifier.

However, with the Australian Open wrapped up this weekend, Leishman has taken the big step of ensuring his place back among the big events.

Marc Leishman secures major return with Australian Open performance

While Leishman has been enjoying his time over in LIV with the Rippers and they had some success last season – especially in Adelaide – his lack of qualification for majors will have been bothering him.

Thankfully, though, Leishman has managed to put himself back in the mix for 2025 by finishing in an excellent third place at the Australian Open.

The event was won by Ryggs Johnston, while Curtis Luck took second place.

For Johnston, Luck and Leishman, it means automatic qualification for The Open at Royal Portrush in 2025.

For Leishman, playing in The Open gives him a chance to avenge his biggest near miss in the majors from when he came second back in 2015.

With so many big names set to miss out or face a qualifier, Leishman has shown the way by competing in the Australian Open and booking his place at Portrush.
