It’s safe to say that PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan is a man under a lot of pressure and stress in the current golf climate right now.
Monahan is embroiled right in the middle of the row over LIV Golf and PGA Tour and what the future looks like and as of yet, there is no sign of a deal being announced.
Monahan is among a number of figures on the PGA Tour side who have come in for criticism from some of those players who left for LIV – namely, Phil Mickelson.
Of course, Monahan does have an important job and his role right now is to get the PGA Tour cemented as the number one place for golfers and stop the trickle of players leaving for LIV.
However, while some will sympathise with the PGA chief, there are now plenty who don’t after details of the salary he picked up in 2023 emerged.
According to Sportico, Monahan landed himself a cool $23m in 2023 thanks to a number of compensations and bonuses on top of a near $2m-a-year base salary.
Naturally, the revelations have caused quite the stir on social media and golf fans are far from happy with seeing Monahan earn more than every player in 2024 but Scottie Scheffler.

Golf fans angry at Jay Monahan as $23m salary details emerge
As always over on X, fans never miss a trick and with Monahan already a divisive figure, certain fans couldn’t wait to stick the knife in further.
One supporter labelled his salary as ‘ludricrous’
While another labelled some of Monahan’s decisions as ‘disgraceful’ and suggested Phil Mickelson is right.
@Matthew1539849 then suggested that the PGA Tour will lose yet more big names because of things like this.
“PGA tour is dead. The best players in the world will play for LIV and DP world”
While another fan, @GaryGentilePGA, labelled the whole thing as ‘ridiculous’.
“That is ridiculous given the state of golf and how we got here… that money could have been better spent elsewhere.”
Interestingly, @KevinMc10077904 where in the world you’d find another sport where the commissioner made more than 95% of the players.
“Wow! That’s more than 95%+ of the PGA Tour players. Are there any other major sports commissioners who make millions more than the athletes?”
Jay Monahan salary will cause plenty of chatter on the fairways
More often than not, we all know that the people in high places make plenty of money and normally, it’s just accepted.
But to see Monahan making money in these sorts of numbers is quite remarkable. $23m is more than everyone but Scottie Scheffler earned on the TOUR last year.
That alone should not and will not sit right with many golfers and in a time when money is dominating the sport, this will throw another spanner in the works.
This will 100% be a subject of conversation among players and there’ll be questions over if the TOUR can pay Monahan so much, then why is even more money not filtering down to the players.
