Shane Lowry‘s first event of the 2026 season could not have ended more disappointingly.

Lowry had an excellent chance to win the Dubai Invitational, as a birdie on the last hole would have sealed the victory.

Even a par on the 18th hole at the Dubai Creek Resort would have put him in a playoff against Nacho Elvira.

Instead, two costly mistakes saw him fall to joint-third place on the final leaderboard.

Lowry has now reflected on his missed opportunity at the Dubai Invitational that will take some time to get over.

Shane Lowry reflects on Dubai Invitational collapse

Lowry found the fairway with his tee shot on the 18th hole, but his approach shot went into the greenside bunker.

Unfortunately, the Irishman then doubled down with an even bigger mistake, overhitting his bunker shot into the water.

After taking a drop, he ultimately made a double bogey, and his chances of winning the Dubai Invitational ended.

Lowry was visibly gutted by his errors, but he is determined not to let his disappointment carry over into his next event.

“18th season on Tour and golf never gets easier,” he posted on social media. “Sore one to take yesterday, but another opportunity this week.”

Shane Lowry can put things right at the Dubai Desert Classic

The good news for Shane Lowry is that he already has another opportunity to make up for his collapse at the Dubai Invitational.

Lowry has committed to play in the Dubai Desert Classic at the Emirates Golf Club this week.

The only issue is that the 38-year-old will be taking on a much stronger field, including European Ryder Cup teammates Tyrrell Hatton and Viktor Hovland.

Meanwhile, Rory McIlroy has won the event four times before and is expected to be in contention again on Sunday.

However, Lowry is clearly in fine form and has more than enough ability to win the tournament if he brings his A-game from start to finish
