Shane Lowry accuses Sahith Theegala of disrespect after what he did during latest TGL match which he wasn’t happy with

Los Angeles Golf Club jumped to the top of the TGL standings after beating The Bay Golf Club 5-3 on Monday evening.

Collin Morikawa, Sahith Theegala and Tommy Fleetwood expertly used The Hammer to recover from three down during the triples.

LAGC’s trio then each won their singles match to seal victory. The win sees Los Angeles finish the regular TGL season as the highest seed heading into the playoffs. The Bay Golf Club—Wyndham Clark, Shane Lowry and Min Woo Lee—end the regular season second.

The top-of-the-table clash wasn’t without drama, however.

Shane Lowry says Sahith Theegala was ‘disrespectful’ during latest TGL match

Theegala, playing the par-three 12th hole, chipped in for birdie to move LAGC ahead in the match for the first time. The USA Presidents Cup star proceeded to copy Lee’s ‘Celly’ celebration.

And it was a move Lowry criticised during his post-match press conference.

“I think so. I obviously knew the guys, but I didn’t know them. Then you’re coming in here, and you’re hanging out with them a few hours every couple of weeks, and you’re on the same team, and you’ve got the same goals in mind; it does create a bond,” Lowry said.

“We have done that on Friday, and I noticed they did that tonight. I think it’s quite disrespectful to do someone else’s celebration. But maybe we’ll have the last laugh.”

Sahith Theegala reacts to Shane Lowry’s criticism

Theegala responded when asked about the incident during his press conference on Monday evening.

“Min Woo is a great dude,” said the 27-year-old.

“What he’s doing for golf is awesome, and he’s just such a fun guy to follow on the golf course on social media. He’s bringing—whenever I play with him and even around him, I hear all the “Min” chants and “let him cook” and “Dr. Chipinsky.”

“It was to give a little poke. I figured it would fire them up. I saw Collin doing it again when Tommy chipped in. He’s a good friend, and you can poke the bear with a good friend like that. It was all in good fun, but definitely a little bit of a blow.”

He added: “If you’re going to be doing that stuff, you’ve got to be ready to take it, as well. So we’re going to dish it back. It’s just the fun of it. I think it’s another thing that TGL kind of allows us to do. It’s kind of difficult to do that on a week-to-week basis on the PGA Tour. No, it was just all in good fun. Nothing but love. We’re all competitors. We don’t want to lose. It feels good to give that little jab to them.”

The Bay Golf Club suffer first TGL loss

The Bay Golf Club’s first TGL loss means they will face Atlanta Drive GC in the semi-finals later this month. As for LAGC, New York Golf Club await in the other semi-final.

Regardless of the end-of-season fixtures, Clark, Lowry, Lee, and Ludvig Aberg will be pleased with how their opening season of the TGL has gone.

With producers already looking ahead to next year’s action, The Bay Golf Club are certainly one of the league’s top sides and could be the dominant force moving forward.
