Scottie Scheffler shows Phil Mickelson he’s wrong yet again this weekend after dominating the CJ Cup Byron Nelson

It was always going to happen, but Scottie Scheffler is a winner on the PGA Tour again after dominating the CJ Cup Byron Nelson and in doing so, he’s made Phil Mickelson look a bit silly for the second time.

Scheffler’s record equalling performance set him on the path to go big again in 2025 and with three majors to come, he’s going to be hard to beat if he plays like this more often.

In winning in Texas, Scheffler proved Phil Mickelson wrong after the six-time major champion suggested earlier in the year that Scheffler would not win until the Ryder Cup in September.

Mickelson is never shy with his opinions on golf but so far in 2025, it looks like he’s getting a few things wrong.

And after owning up to his prediction about Scheffler being wide of the mark, Mickelson might also have to accept another bold call of his from a few months back is wrong.

Mickelson’s prediction on Scheffler not winning in 2025 was a bold claim and one that has blown up in his face already.

However, it’s another one of Mickelson’s suggestions that has also been shattered by Scheffler’s brilliance this weekend.

Back in March of this year, Mickelson claimed that LIV Golf’s Joaquin Niemann is the best player in the world.

However, while Niemann is one of the main men on LIV Golf and has five wins to his name over there, his form hasn’t translated into the majors, with his best finish still being a T23 at the PGA Championship.

Now, with Scheffler roaring back to form again and Rory McIlroy in the form of his life, the notion that Niemann is the best player in the world right now is simply wrong.

Sure enough, Niemann is a fine golfer in his own right and he might well get there one day. But while ever LIV don’t get OWGR points, Mickelson’s argument on Niemann being top dog will simply fall flat.

As for Scottie Scheffler, the official stats very much show he is the world’s best player.

And after his performance at the CJ Cup Byron Nelson, he has once again shown he is at a level that few players can ever dream of.

Shooting -31 is the sort of score that sets you apart from the rest and while everyone on TOUR is capable of going low on any given day, it is Scheffler’s consistency that sets him apart.

Scheffler hadn’t yet won in 2025 but even prior to that, his results were still good despite him not being at his very very best.

Now, after seemingly finding his best form in Texas, the stats and scores speak for themselves.

Right now, there is no argument that Scheffler is the best player in the world and when players like Jordan Spieth are admitting Scheffler is the main man, it’s hard to push back against.

With the PGA coming up in a few weeks and Scheffler, McIlroy, DeChambeau and the aforementioned Niemann all playing, there is a chance for some real fireworks at Quail Hollow and for Niemann himself to show the world just how good he is.

Don’t be surprised, though, if it is all about Scottie Scheffler once more.
