Scottie Scheffler won the CJ Cup Byron Nelson by eight strokes on Sunday, and Phil Mickelson was forced to eat humble pie as a result.

Scheffler was in unstoppable form at the CJ Cup Byron Nelson, and he clearly was intent on sending out a big statement.

When the 28-year-old plays like that, nobody can light a candle to him, and Mickelson must have been squirming watching his fellow American stroll to victory.

Back in March, Mickelson suggested that Scheffler would not win before the 2025 Ryder Cup.

He said, Here’s a hot take. Does Scottie win in 2025 before the Ryder Cup? I don’t think so.

That seemed like a hugely controversial prediction at the time, and now it just looks plain silly.

In fairness to Mickelson though, he owned the poor prediction that he made by sending a message to Scheffler on social media.

Scheffler was at his very best during all four rounds at TPC Craig Ranch, and he wrapped up his 14th PGA Tour title after rounds of 61, 63, 66 and 63.

He will now have his eye firmly set on winning the PGA Championship at Quail Hollow later this month.

He finally got the monkey off the his back with a win this season, and who would back against him going on a real tear now?

Mickelson took to social media on Sunday night in response to Scheffler’s dominating performance at the CJ Cup Byron Nelson.

He said, So I might of been off on that one. Congrats to Scottie on a great performance.

Fair play to Mickelson. He didn’t have to tweet anything, but at least he had the courage to come out and admit how ridiculous his prediction was.

Mickelson has just made yet another shocking claim

As if Mickelson’s prediction about Scheffler wasn’t bad enough, he has now made another truly awful claim.

Mickelson said team competition in LIV Golf is better than the Ryder Cup.

He said, “I have a lot of great, special moments from US team golf in the Ryder Cup and the Presidents Cup. I had 25 straight years of that, and it was awesome, but it was only one week a year. That’s what I love about LIV golf, I love the team aspect of it so much, and now we get to do it every week out on LIV, and that’s what I really enjoy about it. I think there’s a lot of similarities between the team aspects on LIV and the Presidents Cup. We don’t have the size of the team but what that does is it reminds me of the pods we kind of had, starting with Paul Azinger at the Ryder Cup in 2008, and we carried that on in the Presidents Cup going forward. You focus on this small unit to help bring the best out of each other, much like the navy seals do. It’s a little bit more emotionally connected out on LIV because with 12 guys you don’t have that type of connection so there’s this accountability that you have for each other and with each other.”

That is just a bizarre statement really isn’t it.

As we know after Mickelson’s prediction about Scheffler though, he’s never shy when it comes to sharing controversial takes!
