Scottie Scheffler’s BMW Championship is underway, and the world number one noticed something interesting about the greens at Castle Pines Golf Club.

Scheffler carded a one under 71 and is sat five shots back of leader Keegan Bradley. The two-time Masters champion also appeared to be in some discomfort on the 17th after holding his back immediately after his approach shot.

However, Scheffler provided a positive injury update after his round.

Despite leading the FedEx Cup standings, Scheffler has plenty of work to do during the next three days with his closest competitor, Xander Schauffele, just three back of the lead.

Upon the conclusion of his first round, Scheffler was asked whether anything caught him off-guard at Castle Pines.

“As far as surprises go, not really,” Scheffler said during his post-round interview.

The world number, however, did claim some of the greens were firmer than expected. “Surprises? I feel like some of the green firmnesses were different from green to green. Some of them were firmer than others,” he added.

“I think as the tournament goes on, I think they’ll all continue to firm up. Some of them today, there’s a couple that were a little softer than others. Outside of that, no, not really. No crazy surprises.”

Scottie Scheffler’s round didn’t start until the back nine

Scheffler carded nine pars on his front nine in what was a fairly uninspiring start to the second PGA Tour playoff event.

However, the world number one’s round really kicked into action during its latter stages. Scheffler made birdies on 11 and 12 before dropping a shot on the par-four 13th. The American then bounced back with a birdie on the 14th before dropping a shot on the following hole.

The Masters champion then failed to capitalise at the par-five 17th after reaching the front of the green with his second shot. After playing the par-fives in just one under, Scheffler will be looking to improve his work on the longer holes over the next three days.
