Scottie Scheffler has his opening round in the bag at the BMW Championship but there was something of a scare for him near the end of his Thursday.

Scheffler carded a one-under round to sit in the top 20 once again as Keegan Bradley led the way at the time of the world number one coming into the clubhouse.

For Scheffler, who is an overwhelming favourite to win the Tour Championship, this week is all about getting good reps in and prepping himself.

However, while Scheffler plotted his way around Castle Pines with his usual class, there was a major worry on the 17th.

Scheffler tried to fire a high, looping draw into the green and seemed to pull up with a sore back.

He finished his round fine enough, but the injury looked a concern and was enough for him to have to speak to the press about it.

Scottie Scheffler explains his injury on the 17th during round one of the BMW Championship

Speaking to the media immediately after finishing his opening round, Scheffler clarified what the injury issue was.

“Yeah, it’s fine. I woke up just a little sore this morning. I had trouble loosening it up,” Scheffler commented.

“With it being a little bit tight, it was hard for me to get through it, and I was labouring most of the day to get through the ball.

“On 17, I was trying to hit a high draw, and that’s a shot where I’ve really got to use a big turn, big motion. I just felt it a little bit.

“But other than that, all good.”

Always a worry to see a back injury

Thankfully, it looks like Scottie Scheffler is ok and good to go but it’s always a concern to see a top athlete grimace and hold their back.

As we know, Tiger Woods has had parts of his career wrecked by back injuries and it would be horrible to see Scheffler start to suffer as well.

Hopefully, this is all a bit of nothing and as he says, just a bit of soreness.

Remarkably, he’s still under par and in the mix as he so often is.
