Scottie Scheffler was uncharacteristically poor during last weekend’s US Open at Pinehurst No.2 – but now, the world number one feels back to his best.

The 28-year-old carded a five-under round of 65 at TPC River Highlands on Thursday during the first day of the Travelers Championship – the last PGA Tour signature event of the season.

Scheffler carded four birdies and one eagle and dropped just one shot, coming at the par-five sixth hole.

It’s fair to say the American has eased any concerns he may have had from Pinehurst, and he’s insisted his swing is back to its best.

Speaking to reporters post-round, Scheffler claimed he found some stuff within his swing at the start of the week.

“I feel like I hit it nice,” Scheffler said. “Found some stuff in my swing at the beginning of the week and definitely feel like I’m swinging a lot better than last week.”

He added: “It’s kind of hard to explain, to be honest, but just really getting a better feel coming at the top of my swing and making sure my grip is in the right position.”

Pinehurst quickly forgotten about for Scottie Scheffler

It’s clear the world number one has put to bed last week’s US Open at Pinehurst No.2.

His inability to consistently hit greens in regulation was concerning, and with his putter misbehaving, it was always going to be a tough challenge.

Scheffler will now be focussing on The Open which gets underway at Royal Troon in the middle of July.

Despite all the impressive things he’s done during his career, his failure to win a major title past April is a worry.

Landing the Claret Jug in Scotland would certainly answer any lingering questions over his performance.
